A continuation from last week’s thread. Discussion of the three Covid vaccines currently available in the USA — Comparisons. Contrasts. Pros. Cons. First hand experiences, scientific insights, etc...
The current vaccines available on the market are:
1) Pfizer/BioNTech (mRNA) 2 doses 2) Moderna (mRNA) 2 doses 3) Johnson & Johnson (DNA adenovirus vector) 1 dose
Typically, when you show up at a vaccination station, they do not provide a menu.
You get what they have.
Had both doses of Moderna. The only “side effect” was a sore arm (minor) both times.
None
Had one Pfizer so far. Was not given a choice but the first told me what they were giving me.
Lets see, we have the good old God given immune system, then a bunch of manmade creations that are still in the testing stage. So if folks are feeling like being part of an experiment take the one that’s available, otherwise wait 5 years for the typical FDA approval. By the way, for a reason.
I’m 62, good health, and according to CDC I have a 1 in 200 chance of dyin, if I catch it, so substantially less because I’m careful.

When you schedule your appointment online they also schedule your second dose (at least in Maryland they do). If the 2nd appointment is 3 weeks after the 1st appointment, it’s the Pfizer vaccine. If 4 weeks later, it’s Moderna. I haven’t scheduled a J &J appointment for anyone but,presumably, the absence of a second scheduled appointment means it’s J & J.
Moderna has less stringent cold-chain shipping requirements than Pfizer, so given the usual mishaps in transportation and storage, Moderna’s doses have a higher chance of being effective. But I’d take either - the claimed effectiveness rate is around 95%. The J&J vaccine claims an effectiveness of 66% for a single jab - I have no idea what that rate would be with two jabs, or whether they’ve even tested that.
I’m a biochemist by education, and worked in Public Health related fields for 35 years before retiring 5 years ago.
I’m going to get the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Why?
mRNA vaccines are new technology, and the longer term effects haven’t been adequately studied, in my opinion.
Studies are showing that the mRNA may be “fragile” and the injection you receive may not even have enough to generate the desired immune response.
J&J is a traditional vaccine technology. Vaccines have shown to be effective in preventing many, many illnesses over the decades (smallpox, polio, measles, etc.).
I’m not terribly worried about a tragic outcome if I contract Covid, but I do want to do some traveling in the near future, and would prefer not to contract it while away from home, just in case, so I’ll take the vaccine and hope it confers immunity.
Or don’t take any vaccine and wait to see how many in the herd die off in the next several months. 😏
DO NOT get mRNA.
Insane how a so-called conservative site has this many sheep willing to take a vaccine for this so-called virus.

If you’re at a very high risk and belive th BS get one.
I had Moderna. It's actually the one I would want because I/we have given so much of it (hundreds/thousands of shots) and everyone, with rare exception, has come back for dose 2 and told me that their immune response was mild and they had no significant side effects.
I also didn't have significant side effects after Moderna. The few reports that I heard from people whose friends and family got J&J were positive too though.
I haven't heard much about Pfizer.

Same here in Huntsville, AL. Only one vaccination center. All second shots are scheduled for three weeks later. We get ours second tomorrow.
BTW, learned a little trick on getting the vaccine. Here in HSV, if you just show up, there is a fairly good chance you’ll get the shot. They have to use or lose the vaccine each day. If they have no shows, they will try to administer those shots to anyone who is waiting. About 30 minutes prior to closing at 6PM, they will call forward anyone who is waiting and administer the vaccine that would have been given to the no shows. A man and his wife I know when to the facility a couple of weeks ago. Several people including his wife was able to get the vaccine but they didn’t have enough for him. He went back the next day and got his shot. Since they make the appointment for the second dose at the time of the first dose, they also received appointments for those.
