Sometimes you stumble upon remarkable pieces of long-forgotten history when you live in an area that was home to ancient civilizations. According to Smithsonianmag, that is what happened to one Greek farmer living in Crete, not far from the town of Ierapetra.
The farmer was parking his truck on his property under some olive trees when the ground underneath him began to give way.
He saw that a four-foot-wide hole had opened up in the ground after the farmer moved his vehicle to a safer location. He realised this was no ordinary hole when he peered inside.
The farmer informed Archaeologists from the local heritage ministry to investigate the site, and they started to excavate what turned out to be an ancient Minoan tomb, cut into the soft limestone that had been concealed for about 1,000 years.
Two adult Minoan men were positioned in highly embossed clay coffins called âlarnakes,â popular in the Minoan culture of the Bronze Age.
These, in turn, were surrounded by funeral vases which shows that the men were of high status.
The length of the tomb was about 13 feet and 8 feet deep. the tomb was divided into three chambers that were accessible by a vertical tunnel that was sealed with clay after the tombâs occupants were laid to rest.

That video, though, is awful. It looks like it was made for second graders with the execrable cartoons embedded in it.
The video says they found THREE four-hundred year old tombs. The idiot who made it didn’t even know they found 3,400 year old tombs. What a dolt.
I’m glad the farmer gave it over to the archaeologists but as for learning from their mistakes so we can not repeat them, well, you can’t stop a tsunami or an earthquake.
And claimed the tomb was 400 years old. 🤣 then went on in the video to say it was the Bronze age. Well, then, the Bronze Age sure went on for a while...

Yes and the write up is terrible- vague and imprecise as to dates and periods. Crappy reporting but then that’s “Science writers” for you.
What do you expect from a Journalism Major?
The Smithsonian mag often makes up stories with a few grains of truth, omits important parts of the story, omits essential information, or just flat out lies, which is why I cancelled years ago.
I subscribed to the Smithsonian Mag in the late 70s ad early 80s. I also subscribed to Scientific American and MIT’s Technology Review. The were all solid journals filled to the brim with excellent, challenging, and informative articles. Then they all went off the rails getting woke, politically correct, and dumbing down their writing to grade school level. I haven’t subscribed to any of them for over twenty years.
I appreciate the ping, always, but the blog pimp troll that posted crap from that crap site should be banned, as he or she was under a previous nick.
The video is terrible. It is using stock images from all over the world, including America, to “illustrate” the words in the monologue. Impossible to tell what pictures are the actual site and what is just graphic filler.
