If Dr. Seuss and Math are Racist, Everything’s Racist

Ok, so, Dr. Seuss books are now racist. – No, I’m not making that up:

From the story at DailyWire:

A national educators organization is telling schools to avoid reading Dr. Seuss because the children’s books allegedly have “racial undertones.”

For more than 20 years, March 2 has been recognized as Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The reading recognition day was founded by the National Education Association — the nation’s largest labor union — in 1998. This year’s theme is “Create and Celebrate Diversity.”

The researchers surveyed 50 Dr. Seuss books and concluded that there is not enough diversity in the children’s books, many of which were written in the 1950s.

“Of the 2,240 (identified) human characters, there are 45 of color representing two percent of the total number of human characters,” the study reads. Of the 45 characters of color, 43 “exhibited behaviors and appearances that align with harmful and stereotypical Orientalist tropes.”

Learning for Justice alleges that many of the non-white characters in Dr. Seuss’s books were men and were “subservient” to the white characters in his book.

[End]

Honestly, I don’t even know what to say to that.

Hey, guess what else is racist now? – If I said the occupation of sports analytics, would you have guessed correctly? No?

Well, no worries – if we sat around trying to think of everything in our world that is now suddenly racist, we’d have no time to eat or poop. Oops, that’s probably racist, too, come to think of it.

But back to this sports analytics deal. Check this out:

Ok, so, most of the people in the profession of sports analytics are white and male, and that makes it all racist. But the NBA is overwhelmingly black and male, but that’s not racist. See how this works? No? Ok, let this clown writer for the Boston Globe explain it all to you:

The lack of diversity is possibly most striking at the annual MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, which started as a meeting of analytic minds and has morphed into a big-ticket event, attracting stars across all sports and bringing them to the intersection of data, culture, and innovation.

“You can see it at the Sloan Conference,” Sparks said. “I think pretty noticeably — a lot of people you pass in halls and people giving presentations. It’s definitely changed in the last two or three years, I’d say, for more diversity. But a lot of people there are white guys that look just like me.”

This year, Sloan is sponsoring 10 Black undergraduate students to attend the virtual conference, and has 13 women or people of color among its list of speakers and panelists.

As the country faced a racial reckoning last year in the wake of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, many in the sports data community were forced to look in the mirror and examine ways to make a growing industry more inclusive.

[End]

Ok, now, understand this: The people moaning right now about the lack of diversity in the [checks notes] sports analytics field – a field whose very basis lies in an intricate knowledge of and expertise in mathematics – are the very same people who have been running around for the last decade screaming that mathematics itself is…wait for it…RACIST! No seriously, really, that’s a thing:

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is bankrolling a group of activists who believe math is racist.

A group of fringe educators have compiled a six-part toolkit offering an “integrated approach” to developing an “anti-racist math practice” viewed through a social justice lens. It chides the “concept of mathematics being purely objective” as “unequivocally false.” It argues focusing on the “right answer” to math equations is an example of white supremacy.

The toolkit focuses on the 2021 progressive buzzword of “equity” and claims white supremacy and mathematics go hand in hand.

The resources help educators rid their classrooms of the scourge of racist math by making their students dumber. For example, the lessons in Dismantling Racism in Mathematics Instruction warn educators that “white supremacy culture” shows up in the classroom when teachers “treat mistakes as problems by equating them with wrongness” because it “reinforces the ideas of perfectionism (that students shouldn’t make mistakes) and paternalism (teachers or other experts can and should correct mistakes).”

[End]

So, on the one hand you have leftist activists brainwashing teachers and black students to believe that having a real understanding of mathematics is racist while at the same time complaining that an occupation that is based entirely on getting the right answers to complex mathematics problems and applying those right answers to the sporting world doesn’t have enough black people in it.

Something about this equation just doesn’t add up.

Think about it: Our entire lives are based on math and numbers and an understanding of them and why they’re important. I get up at 5 in the morning; I try to have these posts up by 7; Ancient Aliens is on channel 269; the entire Ancient Aliens theory is based on the number 9; or maybe it’s 10; or maybe it’s 12, or 3 – it varies from episode to episode; I put 2 cups of milk/water in my oatmeal; there are 2 cups in a quart; if you don’t know basic math, how do you balance a checkbook; the entire business world is a mathematics problem; you lose about 30% of your paycheck to taxes; you can’t learn music if you can’t do math; you get 6 points for a touchdown but only 3 points for a field goal in football, but you only get 3 points for a field goal in basketball if both your feet are behind that 3-point line; it’s 53 degrees outside as I type this, but it’s gonna be 65 degrees at 3 o’clock; there are 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute; it takes 3 hours and 45 minutes to drive from my house to downtown Houston; on and on and on this goes.

Pretty much everything we do in our daily lives boils down to numbers and math problems, yet we have leftist activists actively brainwashing and shaming teachers into refusing to properly teach black kids math because it’s “racist” and then complaining because a profession whose entire foundation is a keen understanding of mathematics doesn’t have enough black people employed in it.

If Dr. Seuss and math are racist, what isn’t?

You just could never make this stuff up, not in a million bazillion years.

That is all.

Keep telling people they are racist and they will become so.
13% of the population would do well to realize that.

Don’t ask what your country can do for you... Ask what you can do for your country .

It’s the only way to live.

I think since they he watered down/changed the true meaning of racist, I think we should turn it into meaning “cool”,kind of like they did to the meaning “sick”. I gave a teenager a cool game for his nintendo and when he opened it said “that’s really sick!” i looked at him shocked and astounded. He said “No, that means it’s really cool”. so when things are cool, we need to say with a thumbs up “ Hey that’s really racist”.

“Hey, guess what else is racist now? – If I said the occupation of sports analytics, “

I’m sure this can easily be said “racist”, but I have heard several Black football “analysts” and it seems a lot of them cannot speak English properly, I cannot understand what they are saying.

It is too bad that speaking proper English is “White Privilege” and racist.

Let’s eliminate math for blacks. Then there will be no “equity” or “equality” issues.

Ironically, Math departments ARE racist... but in a very different way. Calculus is used to weed out people that are deemed by a bizarrely 19th-century thought process to be incapable of learning engineering, computer science, physics, higher math, chemistry, etc. It’s made deliberately difficult, so people avoid it. But without Calculus, most of High School math is just bull$**t. Who cares about tangents and sins if you’re not going to use them to describe a curve?

By making Calculus a field for only the elite, we’re making an elite class of STEM-competent people, and an ignorant underclass of mathematical illiterates.

The thing is, the current system doesn’t select the smartest people to move past Calculus; it selects those with a certain kind of confidence that women, Black people, etc., are more likely to lack. Worked on me, a white male, too. I dropped Calculus 1 in favor of Survey of Calculus when I got a 10 out of 100 on a test on which I got all 20 problems correct. I rue that. Especially since the professor threw out all the grades from before the final exam.

Don’t rid engineering of math requirements. Quit using Calculus as proxy for a GRE/SAT score.

You are absolutely correct. I remember reading Pygmalion in the classroom. If you tell teachers the kids are smart, they treat them that way...and vice versa. If you teach them them they are racist, they will become so.

My entire generation experienced set asides and affirmative action. We were none too happy about it. But we lived with it. I lost jobs because I wasn’t black....was told so... But THAT wasn’t racist. They got paid for having kids out of wedlock. I limited the size of my family because I couldn’t afford the number of kids I wanted.

I made sacrifices. I worked hard. I experienced discrimination AS A WHITE WOMAN.

Now my kids had to stand in class and apologize for being white. I earned multiple degrees... No pell grants, scholarships. I paid for them.

I lived overseas and experienced life as an outsider. I have a degree in engineering but returned to a life of service as a teacher....TO HELP.

I tutored for free. I provided food for free. I cave up my lunch hour to counsel kids. I gave to charities. It was never enough. It will NEVER be enough.

My kids live a life of service...IT IS NEVER ENOUGH.

I AM DONE. GO AHEAD AND CALL ME A RACIST.

THIS IS SO WRONG.

Don’t see a problem with the schools doing that - after all they are FREE!!! If I chose anything other than the free schools, I wouldn’t have the money I needed to live in my house, or buy that truck (oooh, that truck). So, the schools, what the hell, they’re free and if my children come out screwed for life, fine, it beats not keeping up with the Jones!

FTA: “I put 2 cups of milk/water in my oatmeal; there are 2 cups in a quart;”

Since there are 4 cups in a quart, your oatmeal is either too thick or too thin, depending how you make the error. Plus, that’s a lot of oatmeal unless you’re feeding an entire large family.

It used to be you’d go to school to clean up misconceptions you had, faulty logic, holes in your understanding, errors. Now you go there to learn them.

Yes everything is racist. If you take blacks out of society, racism would drop tremendously. Think about it

The above thread was a recent post from Campus Reform about a Professor who, upon giving a survey to his incoming students over the last 11 years, found that 4% > 96%, as the majority believed that the USofA basically invented and is responsible for historic slavery!

In point of fact, for the years preceding 1810 (British impose Royal Navy anti-slave trade operations), only 4% of the slaves came north of French Louisiana!

As for me, in this tax season and preparing them as an EA, I can just imagine using “treat mistakes as problems by equating them with wrongness” as a defense in a clients return! Should really go over well ... NOT!

Remember when it was an absolutely horrible thing to call someone a racist? It was a certain kiss of death. You could ruin someone's career and life over just the accusation.

Then as it became more and more common, it became almost a badge of honor to be called a racist because you knew your opponent had nothing else in their quiver to fire. They'd run out of legitimate arguments so they fell back on the reliable ad hominem attack.

Now it is so commonplace as to be meaningless. Nobody cares anymore. So you're a racist. Big deal. What else is new?

We've reached the point where if everybody and everything thing are racist, then nothing is racist. It carries no negative impact anymore.

It actually reflects worse on the person who hurls the term as an attack, than the person being called a racist.

We've come full circle.
