A pileup just north of downtown Fort Worth has been deemed a “mass casualty event” by officials early Thursday morning.
The major crash was first reported around roughly 6 a.m., and the highway remains closed in that area as officials work to clear the scene. At least five people have died in the pileup, according to the Associated Press. Up to 100 cars were involved in the crashes. Police said dozens were hospitalized for treatment.
Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Mike Drivdahl said authorities were going to each vehicle to assess medical needs after the “mass casualty incident” involving tractor-trailers and other vehicles on Interstate 35. The freeway will be closed all day “to remove vehicles one by one,” he said. The official cause of the crash has not been determined, as officials prepare for a lengthy investigation, but there were several reports of black ice earlier in the morning throughout North Texas. One of our readers in Texas sends us a video that shows how the massive pileup started.

Thirty-six people have been taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries, according to the spokesman. Authorities had to use the Jaws of Life to pry open vehicles and free those trapped inside them.
First responders said there are still some cars wedged underneath other vehicles, causing some of the uncertainty around how many causalities there are, but they added there are some fatalities still likely on the scene and it could take some time to reach the bodies.
A video from the aftermath of the pileup:
First responder teams sent 14 ambulances and an ambulance bus to the scene to provide onsite care. The crash was declared a “mass casualty” event. Officials said they had used the bus to keep victims from developing hypothermia as well.
Trump’s fault. Icy conditions caused by climate change./s
Because if I don’t drive 80 mph on an icy road people might question my manhood. That’s more important than other people’s lives. (sarc.)
We never have that happen in New York. People know how to drive here.
Nonetheless, may God bless those injured or killed.
Lately I’ve seen drivers acting like they’re on a race track.
So many pass in intersections in Texas these days. Passing in intersections was illegal when I took my drivers test in 1962, where I come from.
I remember driving on a freeway in a snowstorm years ago. Whiteout conditions. I wanted to slow down, but the trucks continued full speed, and I feared being rear ended.
Having just three lanes with concrete barriers on both sides is a recipe for disaster. There is no place to go.
I don’t know if these are pay to use lanes but that fad is killing people.
How awful!!!
Some of the cars look like they burned.
Some people are still trapped under other vehicles and the likelihood of them surviving is dropping by the minute.
Brutal video. A physics lesson in F-MA.
Looks like it’s in the new express lane, which everyone drives too fast on.
It is in the new express lanes.
That came from Mexico. At least I’d bet a lot of it did.
Notice the sarcasm people..
It has definitely gotten worse driving over the past 10 years. Almost everyone is tailgating and speeding nowadays. I am very leery about getting out on the road in anything smaller than an F-150.
You can hear the squeal of tires for just a split second — I would bet this guy had his brakes engaged and was just sliding across ice, but one of the locked up tires hit an ice free patch briefly.
That’s true, but I have to agree it didn’t look like the Fedex driver tried to stop. I have to wonder if the driver ws distracted.
I have driven on ice, a sheet of ice, on the Long Island Expressway, coming back from my toddler’s heart surgery, in complete darkness. In Nassau county.
It was bumper to bumper, but everyone was concentrating hard. Hills, turns, complete darkness. No one made a mistake. (Normally a one hour drive)
It took me 3 hours to get home, but I did.
Ice is the worst to navigate on. Please be extremely careful.
Yes, that’s one I forgot. I was blaming it on relocated Democrats coming in to turn Texas blue. Every stupid action I see, I say, “it’s a Democrat”.
A few years back a relative was visiting friends in El Paso and decided to go over the border and check out getting some dentures.
He said it was absolutely crazy.
I’m a Texan......I’ve seen icy conditions several times in my life......and while my heart goes out to the fatalities and those families who lost loved ones or have loved ones injured you can’t drive like you normally do when we have ice!! We’re not used to it here.......sad situation brought on by be unfamiliar with driving conditions as different as night and day. Sounds harsh but sorry folks, it’s true
Look at all those similarly colored cars.. all boring and dull.
This video of the crashes occurring will give you the chills
Esp when the Fedex truck piles into the accident
