The Biden Administration announced its plan to return to an Obama-era initiative to put Harriet Tubman’s face on the U.S. $20 bill. Her image would replace Andrew Jackson, the notoriously racist President, known both for owning hundreds of slaves and for his brutal and genocidal policy of Indian removal. Based on current designs, a statue of Jackson would remain on the back of the bill, while Harriet Tubman would grace the front. Many Americans, across the racial spectrum, are excited about this tribute to Tubman.
~~~SNIP~~~
Putting Tubman on legal tender, when slaves in the U.S. were treated as fungible commodities is a supreme form of disrespect. The imagery of her face changing hands as people exchange cash for goods and services evokes for me discomfiting scenes of enslaved persons being handed over as payment for white debt or for anything white slaveholders wanted. America certainly owes a debt to Black people, but this is not the way to repay it.And in closing..
But American money, and our national romance with it, is the root of so many of our national evils. Too often America attempts to atone for racism through style and symbol rather than substance. We don’t need America to put Black women on its money. We need America to put its money on Black women.
If they want to put a black lady on the 20 id prefer if they used Pam Grier
Sure they did.
And their masters had a right to defend themselves, recover their property, and make examples.
I refuse to apply pansy-ass 21th century sensibilities to something that has existed since the beginning of time.
The Buffalo Nickel is one of America's best coins.
Obama wanted to do this with Hamilton too. Democrats are so void of ideas to help this country. They are just political redecorators.same ole same ole.
As far a the advertising world is concerned, white families are dead. Every "family" (brood?) on TV commercials is a racial hodgepodge of god-knows-what.
Time to take all politicians off the currency.
We used to put Indians on our money (see post #20) because Indians were uniquely American. Besides the $5 bill, there was the Indian-head cent, the Buffalo nickel, $1, $2 1/2, $3, $5, & $10 gold pieces. Indians weren’t loved but they were respected, all the phone baloney about team names notwithstanding.
All of this reminds me of a guy who sold barbecue sauce in southern Alabama. Good sauce. Claimed to be an Indian and his little stand was covered in anti-Jackson posters. He really despised the man. He did accept my $20 bill to pay for the sauce however.
Maybe Joe can have Hillary finally put on currency...
Plus, we all know that a black person is being added only because blacks are the squeaky rioter.
What a evil woman. /s
Tubman’s played an important role in developing Liberia
Is this Mammy’s morbidly obese great, great, great granddaughter? Mammy was skinny by comparison.
You mean they want to put an insurrectionist who participated in an armed coup on the $20 bill???
All I can say is thank goodness Lin-Manuel Miranda saved Hamilton. He, above ALL others, belongs on our currency.
“Did American slaves have the right to rise up and rebel against their masters?”
I could be wrong about this, but my understanding is that people killed by John Brown and his gang were NOT slave owners. And of course, Brown, et al. were white people.
Like I say I could be wrong. I certainly didn’t know about Harriet Tubman’s involvement.
We’re kind of binging Drunk History right now, maybe we’ll see this one. Not sure they do Harper’s Ferry, but they do do Harriet Tubman.
So, money is the root of all evil but she thinks we should shower black women with it.
And by the way, since there is no such thing as race, so I don’t know how we can tell who’s going to get the shower?
Liberia was founded in January 7, 1822. Harriet Tubman was born in March of 1822.
So she developed a country before she was born.
That is amazing.
So the democrats want to replace a racist slaveowning democrat with a gun toting freedom loving Republican? 🤔
I don’t think they thought this through.
I have no problem with it.
