He may just be avoiding the negative publicity, optics and image that he would garner. He just may be a deserter when the Constitution is under attack.

Correct. When THE President of the United States, Joe Biden, is on trial in the U.S. Senate, THE Chief Justice of the United States, John Roberts, would preside over such a trial.
The Constitution says nothing about impeachment trials for ex-presidents.
