The most rabid Never Trumpers want to stick another knife in POTUS and the rest want to put a 93-7 Senate vote to certify the stolen election farther in the rear view mirror. Support for Trump in a Senate trial is just the ticket to do that.

Not really. The impeachment article says President Donald John Trump. The impeachment (indictment) by the house is vacated as he is no longer President.
The case now goes to the Senate to determine whether he’ll be convicted.
It does because it concerns the President of the United States. So either the actual article of impeachment is vacated because Trump is no longer or he is the President and Roberts needs to be the Judge. Eitherway the article of impeachment is concerning POTUS or Former POTUS. They need to pick and decide but they cannot have him POTUS and NOT_POTUS.

Simple question to ask - Does this article of Impeachment concern POTUS? If yes - then Roberts and only Roberts can preside. If not, then this is DOA as a bill of Attainder.

Patrick Leahy has been in the Senate since 1974—47 years. The first time I saw him on C-Span, I told myself, this guy has to be a Commie. You think this Commie would give Mr. President Trump a fair trial? No, we will witness a Soviet style show trial which were used used to eliminate opponents and intimidate the public. I hope this does not turn into a Soviet style purge with Trump being used as an example.
