The British Tried To Burn Down Washington, DC In 1814

For many historians, the violence stemming from the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6 brought to mind the pivotal year of 1814 when British forces in the War of 1812 tried to burn down the iconic building that was just fourteen years old at the time.

The History

After achieving victory over U.S. military forces at Bladensburg, Maryland, earlier that day, and seeking revenge for the sacking of York (present-day Toronto), the foreign invaders looted the Capitol first, then set the southern and northern wings ablaze, eventually destroying the Library of Congress. The British burned about three thousand books in the collection and piled furniture together in the Supreme Court Chamber to create a huge bonfire, sending flames shooting out through the windows and roof. The glow of the blaze could be seen fifty miles away.

Let us quickly impeach the British! It is long overdue!

Ever wonder why the British did all that and just left? Me too.

It turns out that Madison coveted some of Canada’s natural resources and tried to annex part of it. This was the British response.

The War of 1812 could be called Madison’s Folly.

The didn’t ‘try’ to burn it... They did. A rainstorm and hurricane the next day saved most of the buildings.

Because there wasn’t much they could get out of it, they found. Seizing a capital was a big deal to Euro classical regimes, but the US was infantile and basically had nothing to really sink its teeth into or way to really threaten the country with it. There were hardly any people. (York, BTW, was also a joke and honestly not worth the revenge.)

As for coveting more Canadian land, that’s only partly true. Britain was constantly insulting its young child, including threats to the US land. Further, many American pols figured there were genuine Americans in Canada who had moved there after the RevWar and just to get land, and they would surely join up and take over Canada as Americans. But they judged wrongly.

For many historians, the violence stemming from the storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6 brought to mind the pivotal year of 1814>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Pearl clutching bull shit. Less tha 2000 people , radicals from both the right and left brole a few windows and dooors and entered Congress. This after four years of continuous Cobgressional attempts to usurp a duly elected Presdent of the United States. We are fortunate that the so called Insurrectionists, rewally just rioters, walked through the Cogressional rotunda properly between the lines established by floor rope and brass stands. There was no arson ,or looting inside.

So how can in fact the fact that Americans entered the Peoples House when not invited be compared to an act of war by the British, and the burning of the capitol by British Forces.

Simple really.

The left continues to look for ways to historically support their massive over reach to deprogram, harass, and violate the Civil Rights of Trump supporters, staff and voters. This cannot be sustained. If it is, the next crowd of invaders in Congress will not stop so politely, and the populist movement will simply be re - created vastly stronger than it is now.

And these so called historians? They can be called histrionicans, revisionists, pearl clutchers and psychopomps. Their over reach is worth less than a turd on a stick recently wrenched from the new Presidential arse.

Yes it did. One amongst many miracles in early American history that make one believe a) God exists and b) God favored the USA.

Partly in retaliation for the Americans burning their way across Ontario, Canada...

July 19, 1813 my widowed 4th great grandmother’s house was burnt in St David’s...luckily she still had the barn to live in ...most of the people in the village were not so lucky...her family saw and grist mill escaped too because it was outside the village...that’s still there today...

We went there for the 200th anniversary...

Thanks for that summary.

I also STILL do not know how this “riot” ENDED!

How did it stop in just a space of a few hours? Did the police finally force them out? Did they just herd them out? Did the “rioters” just empty out on their own?

Oh, and you MUST mention how they did not deface any of the great paintings of our history or pull down statues of the many evil American legends in the Capitol, as LEFTISTS are wont to do!

That’s my understanding too. Otherwise the White House and Capitol would have burned to the ground. The storm saved the buildings from total ruin and made it possible for them to be salvaged and rebuilt.

You should see the wretchedly done license plates that Maryland stuck us with for years because of 1812.

It was supposed to be Ft McHenry but looked like a WalMart with paint ball splats on it.

And I don’t blame Him.

But I pray He will forgive us and please keep us in his favor.

Our first Archbishop, John Carroll, consecrated the country to Mother Mary. I pray that bond holds.

Bring us a Reagan! Before it’s too late!

Aww that’s mean. I proudly ordered those plates for our cars.

BTW, they weren’t standard issue. You had to request it.

When I renewed my beautiful Maryland heraldic plate that I’d had forever, they gave me that fugly thing.

The very *day* the new not-as-good- heraldic ones came out, I ordered one.

Fecking hated that thing with a passion.

Yes, their fleet sustained damage from the storm, but that didn't stop them from setting sail, bound for Baltimore. There, they encountered much stronger American resistance. They planned to sack Baltimore, but couldn't get past Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key was there and witnessed the failed British attack and wrote a poem about it.

Rep. James Clyburn has signaled his intention to replace the Star Spangled Banner with another national anthem. They have the power to do it.

There was also burning by American troops in what is now Toronto and Ontario prior to the DC bbq. These days US cities are somewhat self burning by their own populations.

It’s a miracle that Madison didnt get Canada...the Canadians would fight during the off season and just leave for sowing and planting time and duties at home...

In their pay documents that still exist they are listed as AWOL...

My 3rd GGF was one of them...he was only 15 but was in the ‘home guard’ and went back and forth to run the family mill as all his older brothers were away fighting elsewhere and his father was dead...

Still he went to Toronto with other invited old men to meet the Prince of Wales in the 1870s and his death certificate in 1881 notes him as ‘Veteran of 1812’

Ah, the World War when America jumped in on side of dictator Napoleon Bonaparte.

And then ingloriously failed to defend our capital from a small attack by only 5,000 troops. Despite having a 5 plus to 1 manpower advantage.
