Passing along useful auto tools and such, thread

Posted on 12/30/2020 4:19:36 PM PST by Secret Agent Man

As its winter, and a lot of people have batteries die on them due to the cold...

Wanted to pass along a very nice tool that not only can start your car, but start a car with a dead battery

And has the ability to ressurect a dead battery

The autowit version 2 super capacitor pack

It comes in two versions, a lite version for smaller car engines, and a standard version for bigger engines up to 7.0l gas engines

There are youtube videos of the device out there

And it is available on amazon

I dont sell them but i have bought them

If your battery is very dead, a standard jumpstart battery often is not enough to get things going

This supercapacitor system will take whatever energy is in the battery left, charge itself up, and then when you start the car up, will release the energy quickly to get the car going and potentially get the battery back to a normal health capability

And when the car is running again, it has a voltage indicator display that shows whatthe voltage across the battery is, so lets say you initially hookmit up and the battery reads 9 volts (bad). It will charge up, and when fully charged, you'll go and start the car, it will discharge quickly into the battery and the car should start, then you will see either the battery is around 12. Something volts, or 14 something volts. If its 12 something, you will know your alternator is havign a problem, when you see 14. Something, that tells you the alternator is working and charging your battery.

Its a great tool, and takes less space than a big jumper battery setup, requires no other car, although you could charge it ip from another car or jumper battery, and then place it our the car with the dead battery.

Check out the youtube videos about it, just search on autowit 2

I added the autowit to the Amazon list to keep it in mind.

Thanks.

I bought one of the lithium-ion battery pack jump starters after seeing a woman start her car with one. Advantages/disadvantages vs. a capacitive unit?

I carry cheap scan tools in all my vehicles. Diagnose problems with the real data no guessing. So far haven't used one on my stuff but have helped others on several occasions.

I have an analog tach-dwell meter and a timing light. I almost ended up with a carb synch setup, but I didn’t want to risk the storage (tubes filled with Mercury).

To go with your cheap scan tool I love OBDFusion. It’s a software app that does so much more than just read codes. You can data log lots of variables and the tool will email the log to your computer for analysis. Costs about $5 last I looked.

They can work if the battery isnt way low

If the battery is very low it just wont have the ability to discharge fast enough to bring it back

Very nice being lighter and compact than a typical jump starter, though

And you can use this to charge up an autowit device and then connect the autowit to your car

If the car's battery is totally flat, there is no energy to "charge up the capacitor".

I spent $120 for a similar gadget last summer. Big mistake, and the return-by date is long past. It's on a shelf. Thankfully I still had my trusty Schumacher lead-acid jumper battery charged up, or it would have been an embarrassing call to AAA.

Back in the 50’s and 60’s, going on long trips, dad carried a starter, generator, water pump, points, plugs, belts, hoses and a battery cuz a few of those things would fail us.

I for one, am truly glad they don’t build cars like they used to.

Doesn’t work if the battery is really dead and the one I had the Li Ion cells swelled up probably from the heat and cold of being kept in the car outside.

My parents got me a AAA membership when I first started driving. I’ve kept up my membership since then.

I struggle with the disassembled jalopy collection and I’m all the labor there is, any help matters.

The latest big thing is the CJ7s body tub. It’s been sandblasted. The floor pans are peppered good. I got myself floor pans for Christmas. Sooner or later, the powder coat crowd will have the welding and powder coating done.

They were impressed in how good a shape the 82’s tub was in otherwise. Me too.

Yeah me too

Imagine if we had to run through a checklist and testing and maintenance like they do with military planes everytime they fly.
