Need Help: State Farm cancelled my home insurance after fire
me | 12/15/2020 | packrat35

Posted on 12/15/2020 5:20:16 PM PST by packrat35

State Farm cancelled my insurance on Dec 4. We got the notice this week. We suffered a fire and after dragging it our for 4 months, construction finally begun.

House is completely gutted for rebuilding and maybe 20% complete after 6 months. Their reason for cancellation is "messy" yard WHILE UNDER CONSTRUCTION.

Anyone ever experience anything like this and what can I do? What insurance company is going to insure me now with incomplete house under cnstruction.

“Just look around online.”

He will need a special builders risk policy.

Man, do I have a story about USAA that I can’t really talk about except to say

It involved their President’s office.

Their underlings technically screwed up.

They made the situation right.

They ate the loss.

It probably helped that I was dealing with VA money which carries more weight since VA could have gotten involved.

But to their credit - they came through with not a lot of hassle.

I will just say this as well....don’t ever underestimate the craftiness of a mentally ill person. They can be quite creative, resourceful, and persuasive. They could have gone after said person but they didn’t...probably because what happened was the fault of USAA

But the point of this is...they did the right thing.

I’m a residential renovator (”fix n flipper”) so I’m more concerned as to why only 20% has been done after six long months. That puts you on a three year timeline at that pace! If you are interested, maybe I can help you find a kick butt Project Manager in your area. I have resources in nearly every state.

“Check with your state insurance board. Such action may be illegal in your state.”

Did you see the part where he didn’t start repairs for four months?

Farmers in my case was trapped. I used “their” people and just told Farmers to fix it.

First estimate was 7,000. Great. Then “their” people came back with 28,000.

I stayed out of it. “Their” people was a local construction company.

Here in Northern California a slew of homeowners had their insurance cancelled this year post wildfires whether they were affected or not. CA placed a moritorium on such cancellations. In last resort, Fire insurance can be purchased through the state. Used to be more expensive, but since our rates doubled from 1K to $2K—well, maybe the state insurance is reasonable.

I tell this story because maybe your state has its own insurance program. Good Luck.

I have heard overall negative things about State Farm, enough to neve rhave considered them.

I would definitely check any state resources on insurance company problems, and also i would find a good criminal attorney who likes to fight for his wronged clients.

With the two major hurricanes that recently ripped thru SW Louisiana, we’re hearing all kinds of ‘rumors’ about State Farm considering filing for bankruptcy as there are just too many total devastation claims. I’m sure that’s not helping anywhere else in the country right now.

Have they pad out sufficiently for the rebuild?

Try to move to a decent company. Like USAA.
Do you have any family members that have been in military? I got into USAA through my FIL.

Geico isn’t to bad either. Good luck.

Why do you need home insurance now? Your home is under construction. Self insure it yourself with your savings. When construction is complete then get home insurance from somebody else.

Don’t waste money on lawyers going after State Farm.

Are you a veteran? try USAA. I had State Farm for 15 years when they cancelled me for an errant golf ball through a window. What I didn’t know was it was 15 years under Washington state’s insurance laws but I had just moved to Oregon. So my account looked brand new and having a liability claim within 2 months made me look like a bad risk.

I jumped to USAA and been with them going on 20 years now. But then again I haven’t had any claims either...

Yea, there is a lot more to this story.

Mine was a rental, 400mi away. Farmers had the policy incorrect yet had my rental agreement with the tenant.

They failed to update it, 8 years ago. It was a finished house though.

USAA contracts contractors, we have ultimate source selection. USAA pays the contractors direct.

When we had extensive flooding due to busted water heater, ruined the entire first floor. They contacted the mitigation water removal people, they showed up within 2-hrs of the event (middle of the night). USAA paid the contractor. Then USAA presented options regarding contractors to repair the home. USAA paid the contractor. Oh, and USAA covered a months lodging in a nice Marriott during the repair.

So, they did everything. They were there to repair the home, that was their responsibility. Shyster companies quibble and cheat. NOT USAA.
