What happens if the scanned votes don’t equal the paper trail, and the scanned votes show votes that don’t appear in the paper trail?
Voter fraud should be a death penalty.

Then you are in trouble. The scanned ballots drop into a secured bin. Ad the end of the night the paper ballots as well as the final count tapes are taken to the drop off point. The auditing and follow up happen there
Say someone opened the ballot box and threw away ballots.. well first off you’d have to be alone with the ballot box, or have every other poll worker in the place in with you to do it... because you aren’t opening up the ballot box without the other workers noticing and asking you WTF you are doing. Secondly even if you did throw away the ballots this would not change the tally for the machine, the book or the voting list.
So the auditors are going to know the vote total from. The machine is right even if physical votes are missing and going to know someone messed with the ballots..
Let’s say the guy somehow was getting the ballots from voters and tossing them before they got scanned and counted.. then the book totals and the machine totals will be off and they will know something fishy is up.

This is why you vote in-person! You take your ballot and load it into the machine personally!

Sorry but you don’t know what you are talking about. The ballots don’t get in the box until they are scanned. Once they are scanned destroying them does nothing to change the vote totals other than to let folks know the count is off.
People really need to calm down.
There are 3 separate counts, that all must match. If someone is destroying ballots, especially before they are scanned you are going to get caught today... end of the day numbers won’t match.
