Any Freepers Play Strategy Board Games?

Do any of our fellow Freepers play strategy board games? My brother taught me to play Alexander when I was 12 and I've been playing games ever since.

I mostly like Avalon Hill Games but also have some by GMT and SPI.

It's also possible to play these via email and online through various platforms.

France could hang on into 1942 in that game....

Did so many of those back in the day.

Squad Leader, Panzerblitz, Traveller series, Fortress Europa, Star Fleet Battles, the list is endless.

I parted with all my boardgames over 30 years ago, but my best buddy had a mirror collection of them, and more. He lost all of them in the Paradise CA fire of 2018. Many were irreplaceable.

I dipped into Age of Empires when I was 10...AE III, if I recall...but decided it’d never replace chess. Some friends are still playing these games today, so they obviously have enduring appeal. And they are probably a lot more sophisticated now!

Haven’t for years, but I still buy them in case I can find space and opponents when I retire.

I used to play Squad Leader.

Then came Advanced Squad Leader. This game could benefit from some college courses on rule interpretation and legal arguing.

My favs were Panzer Leader and Wooden Ships, Iron Men way back in the day.

I do PC strategy games now such as the Hearts of Iron, Europa Universialis series and Medieval2: Total War, with the Europa Barbarorum 2 mod.

I owned a few Avalon Hill games back in the day. And I remember that they often favored the German side. For example, in their ‘D-Day’ game the Germans could stack units three-high, but the Allies could only stack two-high.

Funny that I can remember that old rule, but I have no clue as to where I put my car keys 10 minutes ago.

My all-time favorite is Advanced Third Reich by Avalon Hill.

Holy cow, that has to be the most complex and challenging game AH ever published; steep learning curve. I know because I have one - in storage at the moment.

I like to play “Messianic Jew.”

We take two or three Christians and give them cards filled with transliterated Hebrew words.

The goal is insert them into Free Republic posts, pretending they are Jews.

Every misappropriation gets five points. Mispronunciations get ten points, and total misinterpretation of the Old and New Testaments get twenty points.

Double points if you quote Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John in Hebrew or any other language you have never spoken nor ever read, including Aramaic, Urdu, and Braille.

The first one to scream “Oy! Yeshuah Ha’Melech” wins the game.

It was! But the advanced one gives options to research pet projects and changes some of the mechanics and economic parts.

My all-time favorite is Advanced Third Reich by Avalon Hill.

I had that at one time. I traded it to friend for Outdoor Survival. 😐

My first game was Richthofen's War.

My favorite is - 1830 a 6 to 8 hour railroad and stock market game with almost NO random determinants.

Kremlin and Diplomacy are also great games. Family likes Settlers of Catan (and variants). Air Force / Dauntless is a game that no one will play with me. My sister who is on the other side of the US is now getting into Wooden Ships and Iron Men. In my war game era (80’s), I did a lot of Squad Leader.

Wooden Ships, Iron Men was a favorite! Now I have GMT’s Flying Coloros which I find to be a bit better.
