Sorry for the vanity - I know we need to crack down on them and fill up the tank, but this needs to be said.
All you FReepers worried about Sens. Murkowski, Romney, and Collins (and probably add Thune and Toomey to the mix, they're wildcards) need to chill. Enjoy the show, as a certain letter of the alphabet has said.
These statements put out by the aforementioned Senators are completely non-binding. They are simply designed to quell some of the Left's anger and soothe passions as the nation mourns RBG. I even wish Trump hadn't said anything about a replacement until at least Tuesday.
Mitch and Trump has been prepared for this exact moment. Already, Pelosi has overplayed her hand to the point where she's being denounced by Rahm Emmanuel himself. The never let a crisis go to waste guy, is out there condemning Pelosi.
Other people who have completely overplayed their hand are the Left's foot soldiers in the media and Hollywood. If there's going to be violence, or hateful comments, especially against ACB, who is a married mother of 7 including a Down's Syndrome child and 2 adopted kids from Haiti, it will backfire on the Left.
Before the hearings (Personally, they should hold a floor vote for ACB, she has already had Senate hearings in 2017) even begin, Mitch is going to read the RINOs the riot act. They are going to be told in no uncertain terms that they have nothing to lose by voting to confirm Trump's nominee. You think the Left is going to stop targeting Collins if she caves? Hell no. Her Senate seat is the #1 target for the Dems.
So, Collins in the end is going to vote to confirm Trump's nominee. Again, her statement is just porn for the liberal media to muse as they report about how "Republicans are distancing themselves from Trump's radical nominee." Collins is going to look at the riots, the threats of violence, and no doubt the smearing of ACB by the Left, and with being chewed out by Mitch, will come to realize that voting for Trump's nominee will light the base on fire and those conservatives who were on the fence will come out to vote for her re-election, while the leftist agitators targeting her will be completely demoralized.
Murkowski is up for re-election in 2022. It's been rumored that Sarah Palin may challenge her. If she votes to confirm, that immediately kills Sarah's chances, because the base will support her for supporting Trump's nominee.
Romney will likely vote no, but optics are the key here. His vote is not needed and it'll be neutralized by a Manchin vote anyway.
So let's not hit the panic button here. I believe these RINOs will fall in line because they will be completely on the outskirts if they don't.
Originally, I took it as a given that Romney would side with the Dems, just like he did during impeachment. But I think there is a difference in Utah between opposing Trump, who isnt particularly popular there, and torpedoing a conservative, pro-life Supreme Court pick.
So what do we do? The Left steals the election in either Michigan or Pennsylvania. But we can’t turn to the Supreme Court with Roberts in charge.
We ramrod a SCOTUS justice through before the election. That makes Roberts irrelevant.
Under current rules, but rules can be changed so that only a plurality of votes are needed, not a majority.
Exactly right.
Jones has no hope of getting re-elected in Alabama no matter what his vote. If he votes in favor of the nominee he still gets defeated and manages to piss off the democratic establishment that he's hoping will install him into some cushy $500,000 a year consulting job. There's no way he'll cross over.
Bzzzzt
Wrong
I penn most certainly is Ivy League. It is one of the eight
And
Wharton is #1 business school. It is always so. Thats not for the slangy term top notch. It is number 1

I know he wasn’t, but he said he would not allow that kind of circus when he became chairman.
I agree.
Collins will vote yes if there is a vote before the election. If she votes no then she'll lose the support of every republican in Maine. She's not going to get re-elected on the votes of independents and a handful of crossover dems. If her vote is anything other than yes she can kiss her senate seat goodbye.
I’m not worried at all about this.
The deals have already been made, probably months ago, in anticipation. Everything now is theater -> some of it based on a true story, some not.
But I think the proper way to view any news is as theater if it's not an unforeseeable event.
You do not need 51 votes. A simple majority Under Senate rules is a majority of those voting. Kavanaugh was confirmed 50-48, with Daines absent and Murkowski, who was going to vote no, voting present as a courtesy to Daines.
I allowed that Wharton is top-notch.
U Penn most certainly is Ivy League. It is one of the eight,
Yes, I allowed that it is a member of the Ivy League, which is merely an athletic conference.
I also said that Penn is not in the same league in terms of academics or prestige as the others. That is the truth. Something tells me you're a Penn grad. Penn grads are notoriously insecure about that. Nobody who went to Penn would have gone there had they gotten into any of the other seven.
A rabid, dying dog or grizzly can be very dangerous.
Maine is a left-leaning state.
Collins or her equal is the best I expect there.
You can choose a liberal Maine senator or a RINO.
She will thread the needle as she is capable of.
If Mitch has the votes, hell let her know she can vote no.
Its just how it works.
Makes sense to me... nice analysis...
Outstanding post! You make some great points and ask very good questions. I’d bet the president and McConnell and most Republicans on the Judiciary committee know the answers and will use them to our advantage.
“Maybe he will be strong this time”.
This time? Do you not remember what he did last time?
You know theyve been planning this for months. OUR president has some very knowledgeable doctors at his call and probably predicted her death within days. Even last June I called mid September. Have had friends who died of same disease and a father with infection in pancreas that used the latest medical procedures.
You just know at one of those golf clubs there was a foursome that included LG and others on the judicial committee. In fact I suggest placing three on the short list was cover for their meetings. They can legitimately say they talked about the nomination of SC with POTUS. Not disclosing that it was how to get RBG replacement confirmed before the Oct 5th session began.
I did not go to Penn. Im not defensive of it
I know four people who graduated from Wharton. They are all highly successful, humble, smart men devoted to family. No success from Trump ever surprises me.
One of my brothers was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer and he was gone in less than three months. Thank God he was kept as pain free as possible.
I agree that the president and his team/allies had this planned out and are ready and will fine tune the details on the procedure to have a successful confirmation ASAP..
You are a very sharp thinker.
