Sighting in a rifle is an important thing to do if you want your rifle to be dead on when taking a shot. Which brings us to the Carlos Hathcock way of sighting in a rifle. For those that dont know who Carlos Hathcock is, he was a United States Marine Corps (USMC) sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills.
What many people dont realize is that the Unertl scope back in the day doesnt have glass amplification. There also isnt any internal adjustments to zero. The scope adjusts with turrets integral to the rear scope mount, and the tube of the scope floats inside adjustment pins. The scope reticle does not have Mil Dots like the modern-day sniper scopes. Mil Dots gives you accurate unit measurements to compensate for gravity and wind drift, this is like Kentucky windage. So in other words using this Unertl requires lots of downrange practice. It is such an accomplishment of what he can do using what he had at the time.
The following is a story by Gus Fisher a retired MGySgt USMC who talks of the time he met Carlos. As mentioned before, I was a very young Marine Sergeant when I came up to THE Marine Corps Rifle Team the first time as the junior Armorer.
My introduction to both high power shooting and long range shooting was in Marine Corps Boot Camp. On Qual Day in Boot Camp, I ran 7 consecutive bullseyes from the offhand position at 200 yards. The 8th round was a pinwheel bullseye, but it was on the target next to mine, so I got a maggie's drawers. Knee High wind got me after that and I fell apart and only shot Sharpshooter in boot camp.
So after I came up on The Big Team, I asked the second senior Armorer Ted Hollabaugh, if he could show me how to REALLY sight in a rifle with a scope. He said sure and he would do it, but since we had all the talent in the world at MTU, why didnt I ask one of the shooters?
Well, I was a young kid and I didnt know any of the shooters that well most of them were much older than I. Thats when he suggested I ask Carlos Hathcock for some help. I didnt know Carlos then and did not know of his exploits in NM and Sniper shooting. Ted talked to Carlos about it and Carlos stopped by the shop later that afternoon.
Carlos looked at me and said, "So you want to sight in your rifle, eh? OK, thoroughly clean the bore and chamber. Dry the bore out with patches just before you come down to Range 4 tomorrow at noon on the 200 yard line. Have the sling on the rifle that you are going to use in hunting." Then he went on about his business.
When I got to Range 4 the next day, he had a target in the air ready for me. He told me to get down in the best prone position I had. He checked me and adjusted my position just a bit. Then he said, Before you shoot. The MOST important thing I want you to do is take your time and make it the best shot possible. It doesnt matter how long you take, just make it a good shot. ALSO, and this is as important, make sure you give me an accurate call on where you think the bullet hit the target. After I broke the shot, I told him where I thought the bullet had hit.Read the rest of Hathcock method of sighting in a rifle.
Is this thread about malware or gunny?
Watch it...you will be glad you did.
The irony is what you just did to that poster is also free wolf ticket indulgence
Internet bullying.....and yes I hate that word too
Not that I care dealing with intimidation is part of being a man
He should bully back...like a man...lol
Ive been to freeper gatherings and seen what youre likely up against here
Its not that scary.....although some of the cat ladies are pretty tuff
I know Matt Bracken and know hes capable but it takes a lot to get him cranked up and like me hes getting older
Squantos ...knows his guns....and lives in long range land
Those are the two I know Id watch
Other than that the forum has a lot of chatter...myself included
Thank u
I sent it to my oldest son.....hes always got a new rifle he traded for he needs to get glass on
These east bloc rifles are notorious for taking scope mounts poorly and he likes them cause they are cheap
I think you missed a key detail ...
Sighting in by firing ONE shot a day?, then taking notes?
LOL
right, with $20 a day range fees, nope
Home schooling is great!
I hope you dont mind my saying that what you wrote had too many obscure references - what are you hinting at?
If you are referring to my post, some background: I was assigned to backstop a sniper while I was with Golf Company 2/1 in Vietnam. Wed go out in the dark while he chose his hide position and Id move back on the trail to cover his back door with my M-14. When the sniper shot, an enemy died.
I shot several Marine Corps Division matches and once for the Marine Cops matches and we used exactly the described techniques to know our rifles. At one point, I broke a range record at 600 meters with my match M-14.
So when some know-it- all pops off with I dont need to know all that stuff to shoot deer, I get annoyed, ya know? The Second Amendment has nothing to do with deer shooting.

Never heard of this guy before...but he's talking my talk.
And yes...the Trump Ad is awesome.
Now, I’m not getting the Trojan message anymore; someone fixed it.
I don't know what's going on here.

Good post,
Bullies Abound.
I got the message from both MalwareBytes Premium (paid) and Norton 360 (paid).
Whats with the big talk s##t. I never claimed to be a tough guy, and I said Hathcock’s method was a good one IF you have all that time to sight in a rifle which I do not. Are you maybe a PETA member and are upset over my reference to shooting deer? Don’t get so butt-hurt over someone elses respectfully offered opinions. The last thing I would ever do is say I knew as much or that I experienced anything like Carlos Hathcock did. By the way, I met him at a gunshow years ago, he was selling and signing copies of his book Marine Sniper.

What's that old saying, you can't see the forest because of the tree's!!!!!!!!!
let me help cut a few of those tree's out of your eye line, so you may see the Forest.
I'm a former "Hand Loader," i.e., I used to "roll my own," I did so for a "25-06" {NOT A TYPE-O} a "30-06,-O3-A3," Full Military version (Loved the peep-sight on that thing,) also a 35 Whalen (a poor mans 375 H&H African Hunting Rifle.) For the first 100 yards, a 35 Whalen & a 375 Holland & Holland are exactly the same. I'm, 66 yr's old as I write this out, and when I was a young punk, I thought rifle scopes was a form of cheating. I've learned to accept rifle scopes for working men. (Read that as I think all Sniper's should use a glass / scope.)
What flew over your head @ approx. 35 thousand feet, is when a Sniper has to "TAKE THE SHOT," the barrel of his / her rifle is 100 percent COLD / room temp. So depending on just what is the ambient (room) temperature, (are you taking the shot in southern California) during the winter, or Alaska.
I was self taught, reloading pre internet. I was a semi happy camper when I could keep a group of three shots @ 100 yards (the longest shooting facility I had access to) less than the size of a quarter, hoping to keep under the size of a dime, but most times just making a nickel in size. Wish I would have learned to keep a "DOPE-BOOK." (Dope = Data- on -Previous - Engagements,) only the military could come up with such a phrase & word {Engagements} for killing people.
One-Shot-One-Kill, doesn't happen because some fly farted, it happens when a shooter and his weapon are on the same page, physically (room Temperature, etc) can see the target, and most importantly have the confidence from experience (range time in all weather conditions) to take the shot!!!! Knowing just where that shot will land on a piece of real estate the size of a dime, or less.
Lesson to be learned, Carlos Hathcock Method of Sighting in a Rifle, is the gold standard, if that's your line of work, even today, in the year 2020.
