The Chinese province of Sichuan, located on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, has activated the highest level of flood control response for the first time on record on Tuesday, August 18, 2020, as rain-induced floods continue ravaging parts of the province. Meanwhile, the Three Gorges Dam in Hubei is facing the most severe floods since it was built in 2003 and the Tropical Storm "Higos" made landfall in Guangdong.

The Sichuan province is experiencing a new round of rain since August 10, prompting authorities to issue an orange rainstorm warning on two consecutive days for the first time this year. More than 200 000 people were forced to evacuate by August 19.

The rains intensified on August 15, with Mianzhu in Deyang recording 302.6 mm (11.9 inches) in 24 hours to August 16. During the same period, Beichuan in Mianyang City recorded 266.6 mm (10.5 inches) and Longquanyi District in Chengdu 264.3 mm (10.4 inches).

By August 19, 41 rivers in the province exceeded the warning level, with 22 of them exceeding the so-called safe level, currently set at twice the level of floodwaters seen during the flood season last year.

I feel bad for the people down stream, but I hope the government of China collapses totally.

The monsoons have ravaged the Yangtze river and its tributaries before the rice crop was harvested.
Also, the area downstream from the Three Gorges Dam houses the bulk of Chinese manufacturing.
The situation doesn't bode well for the Chinese people, and the North Koreans are already harvesting people's pets for a food source.

In the Event of a Natural Disaster, 360 Million Lives Might Be in Danger

The Three Gorges Dam pros and cons have caused consternation among many. Experts are at pains to point out that the dam could easily withstand a large earthquake. However, if the worst was to happen and it did collapse, there is the potential for 360 million lives to be put in danger – that’s basically anyone living within the catchment of the Yangtze River. That’s a truly frightening thought and something that many are worried about, though the same experts say it is unlikely this would ever occur.

I wonder how the structure is holding up under continued
resonance from the release of so much water?
Was it ever tested with all gates open and for such
an extended period?
What about erosion on the internal structure?
Scouring, etc?

Was in Beijing in 2015 during a normal monsoon season. It flooded quickly and lots of water running down the streets. The girls took a taxi back to the hotel, but the guys and my daughter hailed a tuktuk. They made it back after 45 minutes but were really scared,

This link displays some current monitoring data: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2kE7m-cbm8

It puts the water level behind the Three Gorges Dam at 164.48 meters, and rising. It has risen about 6 meters in the last two days. The dam was built to hold 145 meters, with a maximum design level of 175 meters. Wikipedia puts the height of the dam at 181 meters.

During this fourth flood of this year’s monsoon season, the rain fell heaviest behind the dam, so it could be the biggest test yet. I don’t know what the rain forecast looks like today or tomorrow.

There is also the risk that dams upstream from Three Gorges might fail, and send a big wavefront downstream into Three Gorges.

By historical norms, this will likely be the last flood of the peak monsoon season, but it started early this year, and the ground is saturated.

It’s risky.

If any dams upstream fail, when the water hits the Three Gorges, I doubt it will be able to withstand the force.

I feel for all those poor people who live downstream and are trapped by their communist overlords.

Otherwise, I do agree with you, but not to wish harm on them.

Just get it over with.

In the meantime, have you prepped well? Cause the way things are going in this world, it’s not going to take much more for shortages to hit again. We are on thin ice with the supply chain from what I can see. Stores are still having trouble stocking items.

It’s not as bad as in March and April, but odd things still keep coming up short.

that’s not good - nowhere for the water to go except downhill ... weather is clear right now only rain is over North Korea

Yes, I can’t always figure the whys of some shortages. I do notice with Walmart limiting meat, I see many more yellow tags. Seems silly...

I’m starting fresh on stock-piling for the election.
