I haven't had a decent nights' rest in a long time, primarily because my mattress is old.
Is there some kind of heavy duty air mattress that can be used as a regular bed .. long term ?
I have looked and can't find one
If you look around online you can find a good futon mattress that will give you a great sleep. There are a lot of cheap ones that will compress quickly, but a good one will last years, and they can generally be found in most standard mattress sizes (king, queen, double, etc.).
Amazon, but you can shop anywhere. This will give you the high end price.
You might want to check some hospital supply stores. But it will probably be more expensive than one of those sleep number mattresses.
Look into American National. I have used their air bed since 2000. Love it. Not cheap though.
Ever try a Memory Foam Mattress? No? Good. Stay away from them.
Get a good old reversible inner spring mattress. Like what we all slept on 40 years ago. But with air coils.
zzzz-zz-ZZZ
I have had a water bed for over 30 years. I still get the best night’s sleep on it than any other.
Absent that, try a memory foam mattress topper.
We had a latex mattress that lasted for almost 20 years. They need a beefed up bottom. And, they are heavy and need to be turned (not flipped) every 6 months which we tried to do. It only failed because the box bottom had a board that broke during moving which caused a dip and backaches.
We now have a Serta mattress with the adjusting head and feet as well as massage features so it is amazing the past year.
Sleep Number will give you both but I strongly advise against it. I regret my own decision to get Sleep Number.
I agree about the good quality futon mattress.
We got one at Syracuse mattress and it’s about the best mattress we’ve ever slept on.
Doesn’t work as well as a futon mattress because it’s so substantial that it doesn’t fold easily, but if you’re not worried about using it on a futon, it was terrific.
I have found that air mattresses are awful for my back. And they lose air every night. I’m constantly having to inflate it.
Plus a good quality air mattress is not cheap. Might as well go with the extra expense and get something that will last yo u a long time. Otherwise, you’ll end up spending the same amount of money long term with replacing the air mattresses as they wear out, and all you’ll be left with is still a cheap air mattress for the expense of a real one.
What I invented was a regular frame, luan bottom (firring strip spreaders/supports), and 3/4" nylon flat rope across the top to prevent upward expansion (once desired firmness is reached.
I filled it with a custom hole at the foot using my vacuum cleaner
Hell, I can’t sleep barely at all on a mattress much softer than plywood.
I have a real sleep number bed just uses the heavy duty Army surplus style air mattress we used to get back the 60’s and 70’s.
One drawback, when you move (as I did myself a couple years ago), you will likely need to call Sleep Number to re-install your system in your new place. Unless you are very handy and have a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together. I think they charge a flat fee of $150 for the service. It was worth it to me because it even took them two hours to put everything back together again.
How know is good futon mattress?
Once upon a time, I was in the hospital for almost two months. They use air mattresses that inflate and deflate, supposedly to prevent blood clots.
A couple of those leaked, and I ended up with my butt on the floor, and my arms and legs sticking up in the air.
Details?
Nice! I just go with spring mattresses. I hated the sleep number mattresses and we broke ours in short order. They suck.
Buy a Intex for 60 bucks .
They work fine .
