An unofficial Twitter page attributed to a group of anti-capitalist, anti-fascist teens who call themselves the Pacific Northwest Youth Liberation Front said protesters want to establish the Chinook Land Autonomous Territory, or CLAT, in downtown Portland. The Chinook people include several indigenous groups native to the Pacific Northwest.
Portland protesters early Wednesday began to set up tents in the park near the federal courthouse and have barricaded streets to create their own autonomous zone, likened to the since disbanded Capitol Hill Occupied Protest in Seattle.
Demonstrators began erecting tents in downtown Portland’s Lownsdale Square, across the street from the federal Pioneer Courthouse, one of the federal properties Homeland Security sought to protect by bringing federal officers into the city two weeks ago.
They used stolen things to create the walls around their so-called autonomous zone.

Around 1 a.m., demonstrators “in an organized effort” left the barricades and walked to the Central Precinct “in an attempt to disrupt officers as they walked in from the end of their shift,” the police statement said. At that time, officers removed some of the barricades at Southwest 3rd Avenue and Southwest Salmon Street. But demonstrators then began returning to the area and “officers disengaged.”
Things escalated even more last night as rioters threatened to attack a federal officer who lowered his less-lethal weapon and drew a real gun on the mob!

Surround these idiots with overwhelming military, shut off all utilities, and let them be autonomous. Nobody in, nobody out. See how long it takes them to come to their senses with no power, water, food, phone, starbucks...

This situation is different for two major reasons:
1. He is openly carrying a lethal weapon, and
2. He is law enforcement and has powers civilians do not have.
The mayor of this city should face criminal charges for letting this city get so far out of hand to let this situation devolve to this point. More of these young people should face rioting charges. Why does this lawlessness need to continue until more people are killed?
It should be a crime to put police in this situation.

Intention and actually “using it” are two completely different things. A person can pull a gun but never fire it. The intention is that if the situation becomes worse and your life is in immediate mortal danger then the act of pulling the trigger of the gun can be justified. Sometimes all it takes for a situation to de-escalate is to pull the gun from the holster in point it at the danger. Defense class was wrong to lead you to believe that every time you pull your gun from the holster in a dangerous situation that you must fire the weapon (which is what you allude to by saying this). Pulling your gun from the holster means that yes, you have the proclivity of firing the weapon if the threat is ratcheted up. Not firing the weapon shows restraint to see if the intended outcome of de-escalating the situation comes to pass. Pulling a gun from a holster does not mean you need to fire the weapon every time but should you pull the gun from the holster, you must be prepared to use the tool if and when it is necessary. And that is what the defense class mans by if you pull a gun you must be prepared to intend to use it. Not every time you pull the gun you must fire it. Two birds of a different feather.
