How ‘peer contagion’ may play into the rise of teen girls transitioning

In the last decade, diagnosis of “gender dysphoria” — severe discomfort in one’s biological sex — has exploded across the West.

Between 2016 and 2017, the number of gender surgeries for natal females in the US quadrupled; in the UK, the rates of gender dysphoria for teenage girls are up 4,400 percent over the previous decade. An ailment that typically began in early childhood, and overwhelmingly afflicted males, suddenly has a new dominant demographic: teenage girls.

In 2016, Brown University public health researcher Lisa Littman was scrolling through social media when she noticed that a group of teen girls from her small town in Rhode Island — all from the same friend group — had come out as transgender.

Intrigued by the statistical unlikelihood, Littman began to study the phenomenon and, in 2018, published the results. She hypothesized that transgender identification had become one more peer contagion among adolescent females. Anxiety-ridden, middle-class girls who once engaged in cutting or anorexia were now wearing “binders” (breast-compressing undergarments), taking testosterone and undergoing voluntary double mastectomies....

“Peer contagion” is the main feature of the lives of teenaged girls. Every parent of one knows this.

She needs to send her daughter to her local community college for a year. She would have an easier time making friends, particularly if she were open to making friends with people a few years older.

I had all sorts of friends when I went to CC. One was a 70-year-old woman who was auditing classes just for the hell of it.

There are all sorts of people from all sorts of walks of life at community colleges. It’s a good place to gain perspective.

We now live in the era of histrionics.

I just don’t understand why we have to.

Will we let the Progressives crush common sense?

I say NO.

And...and remember that the Salem Witch Trials historically have been malignly blamed on so-called “hysteria” among a group of teenage girls.

As if real witches don’t exist and do not deserve outing and punishment!

Yes, they get the glory without doing it to themselves. Disgusting. Kind of like parents moving into a ghetto to ‘teach their kids about racism.’

Yes that’s what we did with all three kids, helped them grown up and adjust to college life while still at home. I don’t know this woman, a friend of my friend, but was just so sad when I heard the story. May suggest that idea and she can pass along maybe

Who the hell knows how coronavirus is going to warp the normal college experience this fall?. The woman has the perfect excuse to suggest to her daughter that community college might be the way to go. Why pay so much money to a university only to take substandard online classes or have to wear a mask wherever you go? The community college experience might not be that great in the age of COVID either, but at least one is saving a few thousand dollars that can be put toward a down payment on a home some years down the road.

Teen girls have always been very gullible. Many never outgrow it.

Amen! I read the headline and thought, paging Capt. Obvious! Seriously, they needed a "study" to figure this out?

Speaking as a former teen age girl yes we tend to hysteria and are highly suggestible with a desperate desire to please.

Traits that predators have taken advantage of since the beginning of time.

There are many women who have received hematopoietic stem cell transplants from male donors and vice versa and they never know the difference. They are literally “chimeric” with both male and female DNA and it has absolutely no effect on their gender identity or sexual orientation.

What does have an effect is the pressure that developing women feel from friends, family, and media sources to compete sexually for mates with women who are viewed as sexually more attractive. This emphasis on physicality for women is embedded in our evolution. As more women must compete for fewer “high status” men due to the destruction of industrial middle class jobs the stakes are higher than ever. Women are less dependent on this economic relationship than ever before in history but reproductive biology is a harder to overcome.

"Gender $urgeon$" are super-predators.

Maybe.

I think of them more as people with no moral compass willing to do anything to get rich.

There are probably a few so self-deluded that they think they are helping people despite the evidence to the contrary. So, if they can get rich while helping people, it’s a win win.

Of course, if you are getting rich doing something morally questionable it is easy to take the path of least resistance and convince yourself that you are one in the right.

Instead of helping kids get over teenage angst, the media is exploiting to this is ruin their lives and thereby create a nation of neurotics who can be easily controlled. I am a centrist on most social issues, but transitioning kids is just evil.

“I dunno. Let’s give it a shot.”

Kids do not have a gut feeling for the meaning of “permanent”. It is probably one of those things that comes into focus when you are 25 or so. Until then they seem to think life is like a video games and so you can always hit reset and start over.

You have to wonder if it’s an evolutionary fluke. Until very recently, human-history-wise, what we call “teenaged girls” were “wives and mothers.”

Has modern society scarmabled some species-survival trait into something horrifically disfunctional?
