Why Masks? Because Powerless Citizens Rarely Emerge.
Ricochet ^ | May 27, 2020 | The Hammer

...There is still much that we don’t know. But what we do know is that we were wrong. Our CDC guidelines were wrong and continue to be wrong. Our models were unbelievably wrong, and they are only getting worse. Our politicians were wrong. Our Twitter and Facebook feeds were wrong.

And that’s why we need masks. We are not willing to admit that we were wrong. We are not prepared to accept that we were powerless and that we continue to be powerless. We are not about to crawl out from under the house simply because somebody tells us that we were mistaken to crawl down there to begin with. We cannot just stand there, knowing how little we know – we must do something! We must exercise control, and if we don’t have control, we must exercise what little control we can muster, even if it is only control over our own behavior.

The rationale for that behavior is itself filled with contradictions. If the virus is so contagious that masks will help prevent its spread, then we are too late to start wearing masks, and if it truly is that contagious, then “running its course” is the best and only thing we should be doing. If it is not so contagious that masks will help prevent its spread, then we are wearing the masks just for fun. Same thing is true if asymptomatic aerosolized spread is not a meaningfully important mode of transmission, even if such a thing is scientifically possible in some circumstances...

A little bit of a different take on the mask issue.

Went back to the 1918 Pandemic. Seems they opted for sunshine and fresh air and even created outdoor hospitals. And the nurses....without masks....took a morning walk to soak in the sun and fresh air before work.

As for their resurgence....well the boys were still returning from the war and they brought it with them...again.

Back in the day, we were required to wear ties at work. This seems much the same to me. An accessory of dubious utility, that somehow became a social requirement.

Sorry, that’s just a dumb statement.

At this point the mask thing is all about virtue signaling and reminding the public that the virus is still out there and that we are not destroying people’s livelihood for nothing.

Nothing wrong with wearing mask, besides, they completely disrupt any facial recognition system so it might be in use. Consider that.

Excellent observations. Our mayor, a nervous wreck who has to be told every so often by our governor to lighten up, decided to say today that everybody should be wearing a mask in public at all times. (Forget that, I ain’t doing it.)

The mask is useless, it’s totally symbolic, meant to signal your fear - of yourself and of others - and your resulting reliance on the government to save you.

I read a funny comment somewhere yesterday.. a woman’s doctor told her that even if the mask did help, at this point it would be like her husband putting on a condom when she was already three months pregnant!

Masks are dangerous for healthy people

The only study of spread by asymptomatic CoVid patients had zero transmission rate

R0 has proven to be waaaay less than any of the models and early predictions. It is in fact like a bad flu season

Get over it people. Time to get back to life. Rethink the cdc and nih and fda missions. Restock for emergency preparedness. Get on with it

Some Chad on Facebook has been debating me and seems insulted that I don’t wear a mask 24/7..

I just sent him this.

You're not terribly up to date on modern facial recognition capabilities, I think.

WE were not wrong. THEY were either wrong or they lied.

Sorry, I don’t follow the reasoning at all. If masks are somewhat effective, then wearing them is something people should do. If not, I don’t see how it therefore follows that we should let the disease run its course instead of, say, continuing lockdowns.

The conclusions don’t follow from the premises, IOW. Perhaps you can explain the logic of the sentence, not by changing it but as it is written, better than the author did, or explain why I am too dumb to correctly understand the logic of the sentence as written?

The sunshine with its gift of vitamin D was probably the best medicine they had or we have.

The somewhat is so minimal as to be non existent. The virus itself is .125 microns in size. A N95 Only stops mist .3 microns and above.

Unless you’re wearing a cartridge respirator with the correct type of cartridge, a mask offers essentially zero benefit.

The cute little fashion masks are totally useless.
