1987: Valery Martynov, betrayed by Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen

On this date in 1987, a once-promising American intelligence asset was executed with a single gunshot to the head in Moscow — his treachery exposed by two of the most infamous Soviet moles in U.S. intelligence history. A Lieutenant Colonel in the KGB posted to the Soviets’ official Washington, D.C. offices in 1980, Martynov had turned in 1982 and begun funneling intelligence to the CIA and FBI under the cryptonym “Gentile”. Truth be told, he was a mediocre source, but he was a younger officer with the chance to grow into a more important asset in the years ahead. Fate had sized him up as an extra in someone else’s story instead.

In 1985, “the year of the spy” to those in the know for the volume of important cloak-and-dagger work, the Soviets landed two highly-placed moles in the American intelligence world — Aldrich Ames of the CIA and Robert Hanssen of the FBI.

Ames should have been strung up for his treasonous actions.

And Hanssen too.

The only reason he didn’t get the needle was because he agreed to tell about everything that went on. He’s now at SuperMax in Florence Colorado. Solitary confinement too.

Somehow that’s not good enough for me. He should have gotten the needle or the chair.

Sad for that brave man. He almost made it to the end of the USSR. Three more years and he would have seen the end if it all.

No worse treason than the Clinton/Loral missile and nuke tech for Clinton money deal and the Hussein Obama ValJar give Iran nukes deal.

I'd be banned if I said what should really have happened to Hanssen.

Let's just say there's a Calvin and Hobbes strip which covers it.

Hansen is a member of the FBI. I would have said former but but there is no such thing as a former member. Once a member always a member. A more vile, despicable , gang of rogues have never drawn breath.

I still say that we will pay for that with American blood. But since it was Bill Clinton that did it, the sheep don;t mind. After all, he is their god. They kept him in the White House for 8 years and he did do his part in reducing the population of Haiti.

Aldrich Ames of the CIA and Robert Hanssen of the FBI.

Both are sitting in prison serving life sentences with no possibility of parole. Both should have been executed.

I wish that those guys were executed by hanging...

However, I do understand why federal prosecutors offered them plea deals...

They were not thrilled about a trial...During the trial, national security secrets might have to revealed...The defense lawyers will insist on revealing those secrets...Federal prosecutors did not want that...

There was a movie about Hanssen case...BREACH (2007)...
Chris Cooper played Robert Hanssen...

Richard Miller and Earl Pitts are other FBI agents who spied for USSR...

Miller had an affair with a female KGB agent...

The NSA had its first spies (that we know of) in Martin and Mitchell in 1960.

Hanssen is in SuperMax Florence. He probably wishes he had been executed. Living out your life in an 8x10 concrete box with maybe an hour of sunlight a day and a TV if you are on good behavior ...

Ames is in Terre Haute, which is medium security. Pretty cushy life by comparison.

They seem to have the largest number of people in the top 1% of any organization ever known. Since 99% of them are great people.

There were several very successful Navy enlisted spies during this period too - The Walker family was worst. Toshiba made ASW extremely difficult for the U.S. by selling the Soviets propeller automatic machining CNC milling machines.
