Even more confusing, a separate CDC website – dedicated exclusively to the novel coronavirus – lists the total COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. as 64,283. The NCHS website was updated on May 1, while the CDC’s coronavirus-specific website says it was updated on May 2...

1-8 weeks behind due to waiting for completed death certificate.
Also, even though updated on 5/1, data is only up to 4/25 deaths.
Maybe I don’t understand how COVID-19 deaths are tallied. Does the 37,308 COVID-19 number include the 16,564 listed as pneumonia and COVID-19, or do those numbers need to be added together? If added, that gets to almost 54,000, so that combined with the lag in reporting mentioned at the CDC page might get close to the 65,000 reported at the other site. If those aren’t the reasons for the discrepancy then I don’t know.

How would they know if you are infected and die if you don’t get tested? Are they doing an autopsy to determine what the person died from?

I’m simply questioning the discrepancies. How many deaths/day was the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) website (the one reporting the 37,308 US deaths from COVID-19) incrementing per day 2 weeks ago? How many NCHS accounted for COVID-19 deaths per day will be happening 2 weeks in the future from today?
The lack of curiosity and total trust in the (permanent) government by Americans sometimes astounds me.

The lower numbers are from death certificates issued by local governments and recorded by the CDC. If you go back about 10 days, we had about 37k reported deaths.
I know it’s hard for freepers to do, but if you go to the CDC site, it explains the data.

Yes I did. This is the 48th comment in this thread. You just read that number 48. Do you believe it or is it discrepant with some other number? Feel free to ignore all discrepancies anywhere you see them and believe whichever numbers you choose. It’s a free country. Sadly it might not always be and you’ll be required to believe whatever you are told by your overlords.
