Maybe I don’t understand how COVID-19 deaths are tallied. Does the 37,308 COVID-19 number include the 16,564 listed as pneumonia and COVID-19, or do those numbers need to be added together? If added, that gets to almost 54,000, so that combined with the lag in reporting mentioned at the CDC page might get close to the 65,000 reported at the other site. If those aren’t the reasons for the discrepancy then I don’t know.

While 80% of deaths are electronically processed and coded by NCHS within minutes, most deaths from COVID-19 must be coded manually, which takes an average of 7 days. Other reporting systems use different definitions or methods for counting deaths.

The lower numbers are from death certificates issued by local governments and recorded by the CDC. If you go back about 10 days, we had about 37k reported deaths.
I know it’s hard for freepers to do, but if you go to the CDC site, it explains the data.
Usually CDC guess stats are 13000-80000 and they settle on the middle number. But they are free to fudge.
Why is this a story, when the CDC spells out the differences in reporting? This is between when deaths are first reported, and those are deaths confirmed by death certificate. So there is going to be a delay in the reporting of those numbers.
The SARS epidemic of 2018-19 was far worse for non-elderly populations, killing 1,800 children.
