The creation of an accurate .22 Magnum autoloader has long been plagued by cycling challenges caused by the cartridge shape and construction. The long, skinny case has a lot of surface area and resists extraction. Extracting it while the gas pressure is high runs the risk of blowing out the thin case head typical of rimfire ammunition. Balancing these conflicting requirements was a huge technical challenge to overcome until the Magnum Lite.
Magnum Research calls the action "gas-assisted blowback," but it is not. Gas assistance uses a muzzle booster to move the whole barrel (as on a Maxim machine gun), or diverts a small amount of gas that is tapped off just in front of the chamber and uses it to move a piston impinging on the bolt. The gas is then diffused and vented into the forend.
The Magnum Lite uses neither, and the mechanism is more simply described as blowback with a gas pressure regulator. According to the manual, it keeps the pressure curve consistent for reliable and safe cycling. The manual sternly warns about using ammunition under 30 grains. My best guess is that the pressure curve spikes sooner in the cycle, leading to ejection failures and possibly blown-out brass.
The heart of the Magnum Lite is the graphite-wrapped barrel, which is 19 inches long and tipped with a stainless-steel cap. While the extra 3 inches over the minimum non-NFA (National Firearms Act of 1934) length gives no more than a 100-feet-per-second advantage with some loads and none at all with others, it does reduce the muzzle blast a bit and moves it further away from the shooter. I keep trying to come up with something snarky to say about this. I’m at a loss for words. I don’t see a market for this thing.
Savage came out with the A22 and the A17 a few years ago.
Never tried one and it works differently.
This girl needs something of a bigger caliber for more jiggle.
The graphics tell me all I need to know. I want one. (Now what exactly are they selling)
If you look really, really close you’ll see there’s a rifle in the picture.
I'm at 5x zoom and I still dont see it.
Maybe I need to update my video card driver.
We have a Henry Single Shot .22 mag single shot
Great rifle....rumor has it Turkeys at the back of our property fear it
But I would not know about something like that
Its amazing how quickly a bird that size can go from pasture to oven
A reliable 22 mag auto loader is nice...very nice
CZ makes one too
My uncle had a Remington revolver chambered for .22 Jet magnum, which is a .357 round necked down to .22 cal. 2600 fps or so. It really had a sharp crack to it, and the empty shells tended to stick in the cylinder.
Yeah - why would I choose this over a .22-250?
She has a very nice way of handling wood.
You’re probably thinking of the Smith & Wesson Model 53.
To take out any varmin including coyote within 200 yards and keep your hearing intact if no time to get plugs. 22 mag rifles to me have low muzzle blast to ears, at least the Marlin lever action I fired does.
I believe the problem with many .22 WMR rifles is that they have a 1 in 16 twist rate. .22 WMR bullets are pretty much the same as the .22 Hornet. Bullet, not cartridge. A .22 WMR rifle with a 1 in 14 or 15 twist will do better with a wider variety of 40 gr ammo.
I have a Browning T-Bolt in .22 WMR. It has a 1 in 16 twist. Remington Pointed Soft Point ammo works best in my particular rifle. Unfortunately, Remington discontinued the cartridge.
I switched from .22 WMR to .223 Remington for killing groundhogs. The .223 removes all doubt that the critter will crawl back into its hole.
This rifle might find a place on my wish list after I read some more reviews. The 22 magnum is a terrific cartridge with good performance at rimfire prices.
In fact, it is one of my favorite cartridges and has remained so since I was gifted my Winchester 9422 as a young man.
It is very difficult to beat the “bang for the buck” factor of the .22 Magnum!
I see a market for short shorts and tank tops. Im not sure why FR is posting about fashion. Oh oops. Now I see there is a gun somewhere.
My grandfather had a Winchester Model 1890 that was chambered in the 22 WRF round. Basically a magnum size 22. Very nice round for small game.
22mag is turkey poison!!!
What a crappy website. Kept jumping up and down, no specs I could find. Useless. I hate crappy coding.
