Do you feel the need for speed? If so, here are some cartridges that deliver the fastest bullet velocity currently available in a centerfire rifle cartridge.
There has always been a certain obsession among hunters and shooters with achieving the fastest bullet velocity possible. This is especially important among varmint and predator hunters.
After all, an extremely high velocity load will generally have a flatter trajectory and more resistance to wind drift than a similar load at a slower velocity.
Increasing the speed of a bullet will offer a bit more room for error when estimating the range or wind, both of which are ideal for shooting a small target at long range in a rapidly developing situation. At the same time, really high velocity bullets can produce very impressive results when they hit something.
The good news is that many of the major gun and ammunition manufacturers have devoted considerable time and effort into developing a number of cartridges that are ideal for predator and varmint hunters and offer the highest velocity possible. In many cases, these cartridges deliver very fast bullet velocities along with outstanding accuracy.

Yep, that’s the one I recalled.
Velocity is sexy, eats barrels, upsets bullets and like vanity, last a short time, whereas drag coefficient lasts, like diamonds, forever(until impact at least).
The ideal is good velocity, high BC/drag coefficient, and a good barrel.
Oh, and an “Indian” who knows how to use his “arrow”.
Of course, if you’re shooting DU Penetrators from a 120m smoothbore, at heavy armor, then you have it all!
I think they used the same bullet as the .223 and were available in several .30 cal. cartridges.
Mine actually shot very well.
2,400 fps if I recall.
plain surplus romanian 7.62x25 would do 1,640 fps.
I read an article many years ago in the American Rifleman about some hot East Bloc ammo they tried in those CZ’s.
Hot as Hell and probably dangerous in other pistols.
“...the 22 Eargesplitten Loudenboomer...”
Lol! Love it!
I had cases of it.
I still have a CZ-52. All I have is old Russian corrosive ammo intended for the Tokarev. It is pretty hot too tho not like the really hot stuff.
I shoot a .22-250 4,000fps varmint round.
DANG!! are those rounds still available?
check link in 20
love the ugly cz 52, had 3 of them.
The CZ 52 is the only gun I have ever seen that is not just finished better, but way better on the inside than out.
Yeah, the outside is pretty rough.
I had one very pretty blued one, walnut grips.
40 grain?
Barrel life was probably under 500 rounds!
You still grounded?
I happily snubbed th Winchester Super Short Magnum fad. As for the others, shooting 20-30 grain bullets isn’t going to work well in the wind regardless of velocity.
I’ve got a Savage 250-3000 Model 99 takedown.
Prettiest gun I have.
It’s a hundred years old.
It’s loud — there’s always a “what was that” pause the first time I shoot it at a range.
