The popular humours of a great city are a never-failing source of amusement to the man whose sympathies are hospitable enough to embrace all his kind, and who, refined though he may be himself, will not sneer at the humble wit or grotesque peculiarities of the boozing mechanic, the squalid beggar, the vicious urchin, and all the motley group of the idle, the reckless, and the imitative that swarm in the alleys and broadways of a metropolis.
Charles Mackay, The Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds (1852)
I dont know whether we are over-reacting to COVID 19 or merely reacting. When sober people I know and trust like Matt Ridley, Ron Bailey, and Scott Gottlieb (who normally debunk scaremongering and doomsaying) are concerned about it, then I know to take the matter seriously.
But theres one aspect of this that illuminates clearly the nonsense going on: Amidst the fear of a pandemic that may require an extended shelter-in-place by everyone, what are Americans doing to prepare? Were going out and buying huge quantities of . . . toilet paper. Toilet paper?

I’ve got a coronavirus joke -
Oh, you probably won’t get it...
“How, exactly, does a big supply of toilet paper help you ward off a virus?”

The writer is, of course, either being disingenuous or is intensely and amazingly stupid, since no one is making such an argument.
For the actual explanation there was an article I read which noted that for many things we need in everyday living there is a substitute. In the case of toilet paper that’s not so. Although that might not be reason to horde a year’s worth, it’s the reason why you don’t see people buying a ton of rutabagas or shoelaces.
And, come to think of it, I dunno that I’d wanna spend a lot of time around a group of people who had forsaken the use of toilet paper.
All of this would make sense, IF all toilet paper were manufactured in China. I could understand CVS customers grasping that 60 to 70 percent of what they sell, comes from China, and the rest from India. There would be a reason to go in and bulk up on Pepto Bismol, or laxatives as well (yet to happen).
Isolation for 60 days starting on the day before early voting this Fall.
Well, one thing is certain, while other sectors of the economy suffer, the logging industry and toilet paper manufacturers will be in business. For those who delight in damage to the Trump economy... they need to consider all the trees that will be cut down to make enough toilet paper. I doubt there’s enough recyclable stuff... so there’s your “The New Green Deal”!
And bottled water. Gallons upon gallons of it. I don’t care if your tap is working fine. You must have bottled water!!
I got a good chuckle last night at my local Meijer store. Most of the toilet paper and paper towels were gone and when I got over to the meat department, half the aisle shelf was empty. Seems like everyone chose the low priced chicken products over the beef...........LOL!
As of yesterday our local Walmart looked like Hurricane Katrina on the toilet paper isle. Ive played this game before back during the ammo scare. All your toilet paper will belong to me.....LOL.

A majority of it is imported.

TP (((Ping)))
LOL
We live in Spain. We just returned from a vacation in Gran Canaria yesterday and stopped at the Supermarket on the way home. The toilet paper was completely sold out but we picked up all of the ingredients necessary to make our own hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. I don’t mind herd mentality at all.
That’s why they print korans.
But it doesn't have to be. Another FReeper reported that there are 4 paper product factories in her state that could switch over to all TP all the time if they needed to, enough to easily supply everyone in the country.
I have 15 rolls to sell.
I will sell 2 sheets for the price of 1 sheet.
Just $1
there is a guy on FB marketplace selling toilet paper at gouged prices. He’s Asian ( a picture of him confirms this)
This whole thing makes me nuts. I am just trying to go regular grocery shopping and can’t get anything i need.

When I was growing up - there were no disposable diapers - they used cloth and had a bucket to store the used ones in until wash time...amazing how crippled our minds get in a disposable society...it’s not really a unsolvable problem for those who have retained the ability to think.
Except half our forests are shut down because they are inhabited by some damn owl....Who gives a hoot about his damn owl....It took millions of acres of forests away....which is a renewable energy source.
