Afro-Cubans, and some black Americans, mourn the death of Fidel Castro
The Undefeated ^ | November 2016 | DEWAYNE WICKHAM

On Sunday, Fidel Castro’s ashes were buried in a cemetery on the edge of Santiago de Cuba, a city that is to Cuba what Harlem is to New York.

The remains of the 90-year-old revolutionary were interred near the tomb of Jose Marti, a white journalist and poet who led Cuba’s 19th century fight for independence from Spain. Marti is considered the father of the Cuban nation.

Burying Castro close to Marti is, no doubt, intended to equate the communist leader who ruled Cuba with an iron fist for 49 years to Marti, who in just 42 years of life came to be called the Apostle of Cuban independence.

But for many people of African descent in Cuba and elsewhere, Castro’s burial in the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery – which is named for a black saint and is also the final resting place for Mariana Grajales Coello, the mother of Antonio Maceo – might have a deeper meaning

Fidel Castro managed to outlast every one of his contemporaries among the leaders of the world in 1959, thumbing his nose at every one of them all the time as they marched off the world scene. It was pretty certain that he had more than a passing role in the death of JFK, and he scrambled international diplomacy for years, the most recent being the utter chaos that Venezuela has become. The Chavez-Maduro regime would not have lasted six months without the Cuban military stationed there to “keep the peace”, and the total ban on US trade with Cuba was more as punishment for the death of JFK than for any economic or diplomatic reason.

Fidel Castro lived FAR beyond his years. And his evil is not to be interred with his ashes.

“...90-year-old revolutionary were interred near the tomb of Jose Marti, a white journalist and poet...”

Shouldn’t that read “90-year-old white revolutionary...”?

Fidel, who had virtually no black Cubans in his government or anywhere within a mile of him. Yeah, great hero for the black population.

This is from 2016. Yes Fidel was scum. I have an old Life Magazine from shortly after the revolution. In a long article the reporter tells of sporadic gunfire in the background … meaning those who had a different opinion of the revolution were being systematically excuted. Supporters of Fidel are accessories to these murders, Bernie Sanders included.

Total propaganda bullsh&t. I went to Cuba on a National Geographic sponsored tour and arrived the day after Fidel died. Racism is alive and well in Cuba and it has nothing to do with the US. Black Cubans have little or no chance gaining significant positions in the Communist Party, or academia. So far as the exported Cuban doctors are concerned, they are marginally trained, but are basically slaves to the Cuban government bringing in about $11 billion to their economy which is about 3 times what the other commodities (sugar, tobacco, coffee, seafood, nickel, etc) bring in.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/29/world/americas/brazil-cuban-doctors-revolt.html

I spoke to a middle school teacher who informed me that his cardiologist brother who was making about $30/mo from the government was now driving a taxi and making about 20 times that from tourists.

It was a real bummer to be in Cuba during the period of mouring for Castro, as music was banned, as was alcohol (except in major hotels). When Fidels ashes were viewed both in Havana and in Cinfeugos, the lines were miles long. He was revered like a Diety.

Fidel bragged that the Revolution was successful due to the help from the New York Times.

I didn’t notice that Castro croaked. That does explain the Hallelujah Chorus playing in my head.

It would not surprise me if there weren't more than a few at the NYT who are proud of that statement.
