This is why I took my kids out of public schools. I put them through private elementary then then into a charter school for their Jr High and High school.
I can’t help with my kids homework because they are doing something different than I was taught 40 years ago. I have issues teaching my college age students machine shop math because some of them dont “get” the concepts I teach. It’s difficult, and yes I k ow the common denominator is myself, but has math changed that much?
It’s not about education.
It’s about conformity.
They do not want to teach you ‘how’ to think, they want to teach you ‘what’ to think...
Florida Governor DeSantis just officially killed Common Core in all Florida schools. The Gov is doing great things in FL.
“He helped his young nephew do his home work, all the answers were right, but the teacher gave the kid an F grade because he did not use COMMON CORE”
Serves the kid right! If he’s not a ‘team player’, then he DESERVES the punishment.
(admit it, how many of you out there are just fine with your kids or grandkids going to government schools, because their schools have good ratings, therefore nothing to worry about)
Ping.
Parents can yell at teachers all they want but the teacher’s paychecks are not dependent on them. Teachers serve at the whim of the state . The people who actually pay are slaves to the system. It’s like shopping in Soviet run stores . I’m surprised the outcome is not even worse than it is.
So the short version is the kid cheated by getting his uncle to do the homework, resulting in an F? And the uncle didn’t bother to read the instructions or was unable to follow them?
And now the male Karen wants to talk to the teacher’s supervisor?
Belongs on Reddit.
I’m a reasonably bright guy, business owner, lots of social friends, and can fix or repair just about anything. Had a girlfriend who taught 3rd grade here in California. She showed me this Common Core Math crap, explained it over and over to me, and I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I just could not grasp the concepts she was explaining. Her little 3rd graders would cry because they didn’t get it either. The parents were irate and couldn’t help little Johnny either, because they didn’t get it. Now, in this school neighborhood most of these parents are JPL and NASA employees. She ultimately told these parents to teach little Johnny the “normal” way to do math, encouraged them to tell their kids to “try” the CC crap. There was nothing she could do as it was “district policy”. She refused to resign her teaching position and move to a private school because she didn’t want to give up her $120,000 per year job (9 months work) and the lifetime pension. What a clusterf**k!
If NASA had used common core, we’d still be trying to get to the moon.
My dad was upset when we were taught “New Math” back in the 1960’s. It took a year or so to unteach us afterwards. Math finally and totally clicked with me when I took Calculus in high school.
Teacher admits he helped write Common Core to end white privilege

I was mostly home schooled because my parents were missionaries but I did go to a local school when we were stateside. I was in fourth grade by their tests and so they were teaching long division. It was the most complicated thing I had ever run into. It was all guess work and circles. I could not get a handle on it.
My dad was home the week I broke down and cried. Give me a break, I was only seven.
Anyhow he sat down with me and taught me how to do division. It took about an hour. It made sense and gave me the answer to something that was driving me crazy which was what to do when something would not divide evenly. The teacher had told me not to worry, we would get to that later.
I flew through my worksheet the next day. And got a zero. Because I did not use those frazzling circles.
I showed the teacher how it worked and was told that his job was to teach me concepts and the meaning behind the problem, not how to get the right answer.
My dad went in the next day and I do not know what was said but I was taken out of that school. This was some forty years ago.
LOL!
That’s what I hear about public schools.
They don’t want the kids to get the right answer, they want them to follow directions.
For testing, they have to do it Common Core way or it’s marked wrong.
And then the teachers complain that the kids don’t think for themselves.
Sheesh......
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Just for the record, most teachers I know hate Common Core as well, but they have to do it because they are told to use it and they could lose their jobs if they don’t.
However, the guy is also right about the teachers attitude. I’ve met many teachers who have that same better-than-thou attitude.
While we’re on the topic, since many are still homeschooling occasionally, someone PM’s me and asks for advice on curriculum.
Do any of you homeschoolers have any input for low cost alternatives to online and public schooling?
