Leave it to a company that collects more than 150 million plate reads per month to bring public surveillance to our front door.

Rekor Systems “Open ALPR program” will allow homeowners to turn their video doorbells into license plate readers.

A Rekor Systems press release revealed their plans to turn 22 million smart homes into neighborhood license plate reader networks.

“Research firm Berg Insight reports that 63 million American homes will qualify as “smart” by as early as 2022. With the launch of our downloadable and cloud-based products, anyone can access affordable license plate reading in minutes — as well as obtaining access to advanced machine learning vehicle recognition that provides make, model and body type through our CarCheck API and Watchman,” said Robert Berman, President and CEO, Rekor.

Rekor Systems is going to great lengths to turn smart homes into neighborhood license plate reader networks.

If we ever get a Universal Basic Income, it will be in the form of a paycheck from the CIA as we all spy on ourselves.

The digital gulag continues to grow. Just wait until DLT/Blockchain mass adoption in a short few years. Coupled with AI, Quantum Computing, Satellite and 5G technology, DLT will bring about a cashless society that will know your every transaction and movement. Any form of freedom and independence you thought you had will be but a past memory. Welcome to the future!

Well, there is this tiny medical camera and if they can make it this small, they can probably make it read something 100 yards away.

“The digital gulag continues to grow.”

This is why I would start teaching mandatory computer hacking in high schools.

Everyone needs to know how to thwart computer surveillance, and mess up or obscure government records.

(and I’m more than half-serious...)

I’m not saying there’s not cameras which can accomplish the job - my cell phone certainly can read a license plate 100 yards away. I’m just saying I’m unaware of any consumer product (video doorbell) which would be functional for reading plates.

Positioning would be an issue also, I'd think. My door bell doesn't face any way where a camera could read a tag.
Well, maybe if they backed up all the way in my driveway

Same here. There is no angle that our doorbell could get a read. We have an enclosed courtyard but didn’t put a ring type doorbell out there because here they’re being stolen. We do have security cameras that show our whole property and since we’re on a turn in the road one of them sees all the way down the street and the entrance into our neighborhood.

Bingo...none of the products out there have resolution to read plates at normal front door to street distances. Besides, cars driving down the street never expose their license plates to your front door (unless you live on a “T” intersection or maybe a corner).

This does not add up at all.
