Geeez Us H Christ, I remember computer models of tit for tat nuclear strikes that gradually escalated from the "small" warheads to the "large" warheads and were intended to prove that there would be rational negotiations to halt things after a few cities were lost.

The problem was that when they gamed things out with real people giving orders rather than following the RAND script, no one gradually escalated. One nuke hit them and they launched everything they had and started getting more ready in surviving underground sites.

The W76-2 has an estimated explosive yield of five kilotons, compared to the 455-kiloton and 90-kiloton yields of nuclear warheads already deployed on US submarines...

Is the 455 KT real or a typo ????

That’ll take off your coonskin cap. (well, not anymore)

and give your family a permanent orange afro /kinda Spies Like Us (for dfwgator)

A W88 would be good for Iran’s mullahs (Ooh, crowd pleasers! /Broken Arrow

(though Broken Arrow’s Christian Slater was referring to the B83).

I would probably run for a shelter!

The W88 is approximately 475 kt (some reports).

At one time, there were 24 MIRV platforms carrying a number of W88’s on each Ohio-class (excluding the SSGN modifcations to the early boats).

It was said that a single Ohio could destroy 400 cities. I assumed they meant approximately that many.

I always took that as some calculation of the number of reentry vehicles per MIRV platform (divide by 24).

I’m not certain what a more official count would be, though.

It isn’t the idea that subs are carrying little nukes that disturbs me... It is that subs carry women, along with men, as crew that disturbs me...

If the U.S. absolutely needs diversity in the subs, then have it between subs... That is, all-women crewed subs and all-men crewed subs... I thought that that was what pink submarines were for...

W88 is the big one of the duo on the D5 trident..... I build the W88’s & W76’s . The “Dash 2” mod is just the smaller yield of the W76 variants being phased in . Not a big issue as to lower yields due the ability today to “thread the needle” target wise ......... Less collateral damage but the same damage to the actual target sought . Think of the 9mt, W53 on Titans and the B53, 9mt in the B-52’s ........ Close like horseshoes and hand grenades was “good nuff” 13 miles good nuff .....

We can put W88’s / W76’s in Putin’s bowl of borsch from thousands of miles away ..... Dotting the eye of the MAD Doctrine.
