Time to Dust Off Survivalist Plans? (vanity)
(none) ^ | Jan 27, 2020 | BobL

Back about a decade ago with the housing meltdown of 2008, followed by our lovely leader for the next 8 years, many of us started thinking about what life would be like after 'it' happened. Thankfully 'it' never happened. But one of our concerns was a pandemic, not just due to the direct suffering it could cause, but the indirect consequences, such as disruption of the food supply and possibly disruption of utilities.

On a disaster scale, I would rate this somewhat in the middle, with hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes being the easiest to deal with, since they're localized, and a large-scale nuclear war being the worst (followed pretty closely by a complete economic meltdown).

But since Trump got elected, I think some of us may have gotten a bit complacent (I certainly did). But now, with many thousands of people still arriving from Asia, and even most of China, and with an identified 'it', perhaps it's time to check our stocks of food, fuel, our water supply plans, and, of course, our Second Amendment compliance status.

Best of luck to all!

As of Dec 2019, 2400 people have died from the flu and 2.5 Million people where infected - and you are worried about the 81 people that have died, mostly in 3rd world hell-holes living in unsanitary conditions?
Leave the panicing to the DUmmies.
Just like every other media-induced orgy of doom, this too shall pass.

I have to disagree pretty strongly here.

First, the videos I have seen coming from China are from a modern country - not from a "3rd world hell hole".

Second, it took a single person to start all of this in China, and they currently have modern highway systems blocked with cinder blocks to help prohibit travel. We already have multiple patients in the US - we may see similar travel restrictions imposed in the US (and if not, then we may see far worse).

It's not just the numbers of people infected that should be a cause for concern, but the rate of growth of those numbers. I do not know that number for this virus, however I do know that it was sufficient for a number of serious professionals to sound the alarm.

Finally, I guess one could have said "this, too, shall pass" of two World Wars. That sounds more like a "know-it-all" philosophy than a winning philosophy.

Actually my disaster response activity involves civil govt as well. But then you probably couldn’t figure that out because it interferes with your bias and ignorance.

Like the director of Johns Hopkins’ School of Public Health who tweeted out yesterday we should be preparing national and international plans for what to do if this can’t be contained? And who suggested multiple crash research programs into vaccines where “money is no object”?
Or the Lancet which pointed out this has an R0 of 2.5?
Or Beijing which 3 days ago designated 20 hospitals in Beijing to handle cases, even though at that point Beijing had only 10 confirmed patients?

Sod off.

i WAS TOLD THAT i HAD 6YRS. That was in 2004. I refused the chemo because my son had it and he is on 100% (pain 24/7) disability now due to it. The cure was worse than the C. I have 2 sons, both on disability, the other one is not C related. That’s life!

Gas for cars. I was just talking to my wife about gas for a car. Gas only last some many months.

I think the best back up to a gas for a car is a bicycle. Use a bicycle for stuff nearby.

Maybe the new E-bikes would be good to if you have solar power at the house. Need to run the calculations on how long to charge a bike battery with a solar panels.
