France: Vigilantes Winning War Against Speed Cameras

Next-generation speed cameras are being destroyed faster than they can be deployed in France.

French officials were convinced that mounting speed cameras high atop poles would keep them from being attacked. The government committed to replacing every existing photo radar installation with these next-generation "turret" speed cameras only to learn that the devices are being destroyed faster than they are deployed. According to the experts at Radars-Auto.com, twelve cameras have been installed in the Tarn department since January 1, but a total of thirteen turret cameras there have been knocked out of service during the same period.

On Friday, vigilantes used white paint to blind the speed camera on the A320 in Forbach. On Thursday, the turret camera on the RD612 in Beziers was cut down. Down the same road toward Agde, another turret camera was pried open and blinded with yellow spraypaint. On January 11, vigilantes cut down the speed camera on the RD600 in Sainte-Croix.

Vigilantes in San Giuliano, Italy, took out a trio of orange Velo OK brand speed cameras last week. The camera on the Via Gorky was blown up on January 10. The device on the Via Della Repubblica was knocked over, and on January 12 the camera on the Via Tolstoj was struck with a blunt object. In Cuneo, the speed camera on the SS231 was rammed on Thursday.

Now only if they were as vigilant at avoiding socialism and social degeneracy (but I repeat myself) as they are about avoiding speeding tickets.

When I lived in the Seattle area I noticed all the cameras were atop poles that looked like they were 8” base diameter hollow aluminum poles. I figured that a guy could just use an 8 lb maul to give it a good chop at the bottom, like when cutting down a tree. This would create a really good crimp. Then lassoo the top with a rope and simply pull it down.

Not that I ever did it or ever would. But it seemed like it would be easy to do. Of course, you’d want to wear a disguise, walk there, and leave the maul and rope. And nowadays you’d probably want to make sure you park your car where nobody’s front door security camera could pick it up...

The Yellow Vest protesters are trying.

“And nowadays you’d probably want to make sure you park your car where nobody’s front door security camera could pick it up...”

Likewise, one would want to be sure there isn’t a second camera, trained on the speed camera.

I thought of a drone with camera and a dump tank full of paint like a fire fighting plane...

That’s what the disguise is for.

Wear a logging shirt with a pillow for a fake gut, groucho glasses and a cap with fake dreadlocks. :)

And you probably should move fast. Maybe get to the camera on a bicycle.

That would certainly be doable nowadays.

Frankly, why not paint guns. Simple and effective. But, again, you don’t want to get caught on camera doing it.

Evidently they only like big authoritarian government that gives them stuff.

Still, it is encouraging, and I smiled as I read it.

A drone with a remote control spray can could work quickly.

If you parked your car in front of someone’s security camera their would be a better chance of catching the person who used an 8lb maul on your car.

I just thought of another great idea: Buy your shirt at Costco. It will be too common to be used to identify you.

This is fun.

Is it illegal to do “what if?” like this?

It should be fine in my case. They don’t have those cameras around here. It’s one reason I live here. :)

It’s one of those things where the key is never being a suspect. I think that in a lot of cases, the key is to keep from ever being a suspect, and once you are one, your goose is cooked. That is, your guilt is easily discovered. But they have to bother to look, first.

Aren’t they protesting against less socialism than they want? Not enough benefits, etc?

I could definitely be wrong.

Vote in a few Democrats. The speed camera companies can buy them, cheap.

Presto, you have "life saving traffic control". Hey, it works in Chicago...

How hard would it be to rig a drone up with paint can or a paint-ball gun?

Fortunately, I think the fad has already reached its peak in the US. I suspect places that don’t already have them will not have them - at least for the foreseeable future.

Here in KY we mitigate the risk by having a three second delay between the time one light turns red and the other turns green. In some locations, it’s six seconds - Three seconds before the walk sign goes white and then another three seconds before the traffic light goes green.

I can time it to get an early start and easily beat other cars off the line if I have to merge in fast. :)
