Apparently #2 in its release year and lower on 2 totally different years.

But it was #14 for the whole of 1963.

Well first I’d have to do the ‘90s...

And for each of those decades, I’d rather do country specifically!

I didn’t mention the extra difficulty that play-offs are based on 8 items of the same category, whereas at best here we have 6 for a year. Very difficult to put them into brackets.

To: Alas Babylon!

And actually if you look better, there is a pairing 3 years separated. All because of which #7 songs were retained.

ROUND 2 PAIRS/BRACKETS (rank/year/title/act)

My choices are:

1 1960 “Theme from A Summer Place” Percy Faith

1 1964 “I Want to Hold Your Hand” The Beatles

2 1964 “She Loves You” The Beatles

5 1966 “96 Tears” ? and the Mysterians

4 1966 “Reach Out I’ll Be There” Four Tops

3 1967 “Ode to Billie Joe” Bobbie Gentry

5 1967 “I’m a Believer” The Monkees

1 1968 “Hey Jude” The Beatles

4 1968 “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” Otis Redding

2 1968 “Love is Blue” Paul Mauriat

3 1969 “I Can’t Get Next to You” The Temptations

1 1969 “Sugar, Sugar” The Archies

6 1969 “Dizzy” Tommy Roe

I grade generally on a) artistic merit/creativity, b) longevity (do they still get airplay?) and milestones (are they considered landmark songs of the era).

Some brackets had two songs I liked and others two songs I don’t care for but I looked only on this particular bracket and not what it might say for further down the line.

It would be interesting, for each round forward, to re-rank by percentage of votes and then reset the brackets based on most popular vs. least popular, second highest to second lowest, etc so the highest vote getters do not go head-to-head in the early rounds.

It would make for a more interesting quarterfinals, semis and championship round.

It doesn't look as though "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro got a single vote. That song often pops up on charts of least favorite songs of all time. However, Rudy Vallee's version of "Honey" is among my top 100 favorite songs.
