Defeating terrorists would involve an honest threat assessment and disruption of their recruiting & financial networks. All of that was begun after 9/11, but quickly overturned.

Canada would probably be right up there with China as far as places I wouldn’t want to invade. Canadians have whipped American forces before (yeah, 200 years ago, but it happened) and have proven themselves to be damn tough fighters in many wars. I just read about the former commandant of the Canadian military academy, former North-West Mounted Police, highly decorated in the Boer War and World War I. Was known for being right there on the front lines with his troops despite being a division commander. Sir McDonnell I think his name was. I’d certainly hate to have to fight his descendants.

These days there wouldn’t be a fight, Canadians would welcome US military with open arms.

We weren't either.

I wish Canada were a part of the USA, because I really want to retire north.

On a more positive note, when the united States were operating under the Articles of Confederation (prior to ratifying the Constitution), we had a standing invitation to Canada, to join our federal union:

Canada acceding to this confederation, and adjoining in the measures of the united States, shall be admitted into, and entitled to all the advantages of this union; but no other colony shall be admitted into the same, unless such admission be agreed to by nine States.
Article XI, Articles of Confederation

Apparently our neighbors to the north did not pursue the offer; whether that might be considered a good thing, or bad, is obviously subject to discussion...

I love the war of Spanish Succession. Sometimes called Queen Anne’s War.

Even today we have war plans with any potential adversary. This is nothing new.

British forces won and lost battles with Americans along the Canadian border; the US has never fought a war against Canada itself (independent in 1867). In fact, we provide for their defense.

"What did you do during the war, grandpa?"

"Well, I drafted the plans we would have used to defeat Canada."

That's still a lot better than "Well, I shoveled shit in Louisiana" as per Patton...

If I remember correctly, the scenario for a war with Canada was in the event that Great Britain either surrendered to, or join some kind of an alliance with, Germany in 1940. This contingency was planned for in case Canada became hostile to the US or US interests in league with Nazi Germany.

By the same token, war with Great Britain was planned in case it was necessary to rest control away from Hitler, under a similar scenario. An invasion of continental Europe would have been staged from England, just as it was in reality. This is the reason why the flying wing bomber was being developed during World War II as well, because it was thought that we may have to fly across Atlantic to strike Germany or German held territories, without the benefit of our English allies. The Army Air Force was looking for very long range bombing capabilities.
