‘Racism permeates everything’: Running as a black candidate after Obama
Politico ^ | 12/17/19 | LAURA BARRÓN-LÓPEZ

When Kamala Harris dropped out two weeks ago, it hit Cory Booker hard.

She may have been his rival in the race for the Democratic nomination, but her exit represented something bigger. If Harris — a friend of Booker’s and the only black woman in the race, who began her campaign with such promise — couldn’t make it to Iowa, what did it mean for him, a black man still in the fight but unable to qualify for the Democratic debate?

At the heart of Booker’s dilemma is a larger question about the Democratic Party and American politics: What if Barack Obama was not just the first, but the only person who is not a white man to occupy the White House for decades to come?

“That’s a very real fear,” said Bakari Sellers, a prominent South Carolina Democrat who supported Harris’ bid. It feels like the country has taken a giant step backwards, he said. “It’s hard to answer the question of, how did you go from Barack Obama to Donald Trump?”

Harris’ downfall, Booker’s struggles and Julián Castro’s single-digit polling have caused Democrats across the party, and especially people of color, to ask what’s led the party to this juncture, where all the frontrunners are white, and most of them are male and in their 70s. In July, Democrats had the most diverse debate stage in history. Five months later, all the participants are white except for Andrew Yang, who cleared the bar by a single percentage point in one poll on the final day to qualify.

To have a civil dialog in a public forum, people MUST get beyond color of skin, pigment tone. Tried and tried to say, to scream and repeat...IT IS THE POLICIES that Kamala Harris holds true and dear to her very being that we reject, not the genetic makeup that decides her skin color. Drop the Race Bait card PLEASE...Kamala and Cory...

Obama won because of racism. When people vote for a candidate because of his or her race, that’s the very definition of racism.

“It’s hard to answer the question of, how did you go from Barack Obama to Donald Trump?”

No ... not really. All you need to do is look back over the years and count all the times Obama brought racism into any current affair at the time.

Obie’s policies (many of which were racist) and attempts to fundamentally change America have seriously frightened voters who won’t support another candidate who governs based on race...no matter their color. Reparations, anyone ?

We need another dose of MLK’s ‘character not color’, which I do not see in any D candidates. It’d be great if we were all colorblind.

And their answer is Trump is to somehow to blame.

Minorities realize that Obama did nothing and only helped himself. They are no better off. The mass of people that flooded into DC for his Inauguration were filled with such hope. There was no way he could achieve what they hoped because his personal agenda came first.

race relations in America were doing just fine until B.H. Obama was elected and turned EVERY damned thing to race.
After his act I have no interest in race relations.

Democrat blacks see racism everywhere. If whites hated blacks as much as they assume, Obama would not have been elected.

Obama rode into office on an ENORMOUS reservoir of good will by whites towards blacks — which he promptly set about depleting over eight years. Now, white people get the impression that an elected black Democrat will focus exclusively on benefiting blacks at the expense of whites.

How About Candice Owens ?

Beautifully talented, articulate black woman that can think on her feet, actually has things of substance to say, is grounded, kind, smart, funny, sincere, charming and dedicated to making a better place for all without segregating or country.

Her only problem is she’s not a mean dumb a$$ Liberal.

There are many many other wonderful Black speakers, leaders but unfortunately for the Demwitocrats these other choices are Conservative and genuinely understand today’s problems,

The problem is Not color and not just bankrupt liberal thought it is the lefts propensity for choosing ugly angry, negative people. Or smug, condescending elitists like Obamination.

I dunno, perhaps that like Harris he is an incompetent ass?

This forum is full of old white guys. Who, at one time, would not have voted for Condodoleezza Rice? Ideology, not race, is the deciding factor.

The problem with the democRATS is that they select their candidates based on "diversity" or their turn in line, like Hillary or Biden. By race, gender and age instead of whether they are a good political candidate.

Instead of selecting their candidates on their electability. Can they give a good stump speech? Can they release to the electorate? Are they charismatic and personable? Can they generate excitement among the voters?

Punching all the buttons doesn't make a good candidate. Checking off all the "diverse" boxes doesn't make for a good candidate.

Kamala Harris had to drop out of the race, not because of racism and she was a woman of color, but because she was a lousy candidate.

Same reason why Booker himself is not doing well. Not becasue of racism and he's black. But because he's a lousy political campaigner.

They focus on the wrong criteria for a good candidate. Until they change that, they will have lousy candidates running.

Has anyone else noticed that there is more racism now in US society than before Obama? I don’t think its coming from the right.

It’s almost as if someone doesn’t want civil discourse. Thus far, the discord has resounded only to the benefit of the race pimps, and the Dimocrats. And that’s enough. DJT threatens that paradigm, bigly.

Well, then...black candidates might just have to stop basing their entire campaigns on telling voters what they plan to loot from white people. It may come as a surprise to them, but Revolutionary Communism doesn’t play well with whites outside the self-loathing halls of academia and the media.
