Today is December 13th and it’s Ted Nugent’s Birthday!

The Nuge. Uncle Ted. Great Gonzo. The Motor City Madman. He goes by many names, but the one-and-only Ted Nugent is most well known as a conservative rock-and-roller who speaks his mind just as easily as he plays the guitar. He’s one of those “only in America” stories like many other right-wing rockers (Elvis Presley, Gene Simmons and Johnny Ramone are just some of the more obvious and awesome examples).

They had just changed their name from the Amboy Dukes to Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes when they played my Jr/Senior Prom in 1969.

My memory is vague but I think I may have seen the Amboy Dukes live at the Club Pony Tail in Harbor Springs, MI in the summer of 1968........

I always liked the guy, liked some of his music. My one black mark against him was a magazine interview he gave (probably more than 30 years ago) where he described what he did to get out of the draft. Because I was part of that generation (I joined, wasn't drafted) anyone who tried to ‘beat’ the draft has always had a small X next to their name. I do very much appreciate his support of the 2nd amendment.

I saw Uncle Ted back in the day at the Blue Moon Ballroom in Elgin IL. It was an all ages show. I was about 17 IIRC.

Been a fan ever since.

He later claimed he was just beign a jerk to the high times magazine- He actually had a high school deferment (1-S) in 1967 and then (as he stated) a college student deferment (2-S) in 1968.

He was listed as ‘available for active duty, but later failed a physical- He was listed as 1-Y which basically meant he had a limiting physical defect of some kind, but could serve IF war broke out- but later was given a 4-F, meaning he was physically unfit for even that-

so he was just blowing smoke to high times when he claimed what he did in the interview- He likely didn’t want to admit that he was physically unfit
