I've managed to live without Facebook and Twitter.
However, we're in a rural area and apparently Facebook Marketplace is the place to go for local classifieds for buying/selling and for offering/finding services. I need someone to haul some scrap metal off our property and have hit a brick wall trying to find someone through my small network of contacts (I'm at a new job at month 4).
So I'm reluctantly considering opening a Facebook account, if only because the site's popups make it virtually unusable without one. I've also noticed a lot of local businesses don't have web sites in lieu of a Facebook page. I don't get it, but whatever.
Any advice on signing up and configuring the account to maximize my privacy and minimize annoyances?
If that name is taken, use Carlos Danger.
If you want to use Marketplace, use your real name. Otherwise, people who will think you are a scammer. Use a profile picture of your cat. I use a P-51 Mustang.
When she's not working at the club, is she a red-headed hairdresser named Tiffany?
Which two? I bet there are FReepers nearby that might be bored.
That wouldn’t paint a bullseye on him now would it?
I live in Yorktown VA. If I find out he’s between Richmond and Norfolk...
If George Washington hadn’t defeated Lord Cornwallis in Yorktown (Oct 19-20, 1781) we would still be speaking English in this country.
I sell a ton of antique car parts and old tractor parts on FB. Never had a problem.
I own apartments and that is where I get all my renters. Use FB to weed out prospective tenants-look at their photos, who they hang out with and what they post etc. besides my criminal and credit checks.
I love Fb but use fake birth date etc
I nuked my FB account and opened one for the precise purpose you are citing. I use a nome de plume..... tied to a burner email address.
Set up a bogus email address (outlook, yahoo, gmail... lots of options). If you are really paranoid, set up a burner email, then set up a SECOND burner email tied to the first one, then delete the first one. Use that second email to set up a fb account with a bogus name.
If you can resist the temptation to enter into the lunacy of the political nukefests on FB and just use it to buy/sell, it is useful.
When I had a FacePlant account I created an email account at hotmail. I think they’re live.com now. I used a fake name and zero real life info.
It was good for about three years until I made the mistake of actually using it. The lefties mass reported me and my account got locked. FacePlant required I supply a phone number in order to unlock. Since I was unwilling to provide one I let the account go.
Just forewarning that they may impose the same requirement on you...
STAY AWAY FROM fazecrook!!!
craiglist is no good anymore. Just a bunch of scammers and sickos there now.
Ask at Home Depot, The Old Local Hardware Store, Feed and Tack Stores. They will know Someone that hauls off scrap and stuff.
Ill second and third the Neighborhood/Nextdoor Site.
Heck stop by the Local Fire Station and ask them.
Advice on opening a Facebook account? DON’T!
I was going to specify the county, but I believe I have identified the industry I’m in within previous posts. If I gave the counties, that would pretty much identify my employers. Unfortunately, with the times we live in, it’s not prudent to make that info public.
We live rural also. Without facebook you would have no idea what is going on in the community. Most small rural communities have a facebook page and discussions on everything from lost dogs to who is running for school board. There are announcements from the churches, volunteer fire departments and school sports teams.
I joined the buy, sell and trade groups for 50 plus miles around where I live and there are ten times the adds and traffic there are on Craig’s list or anywhere else.
Yea, farcebook is a pain, but there isn’t much like it in the rural areas. At one time you could talk to the old guys at the General Store or Feed Store, but that just isn’t really there anymore most places.
And I can say they are tracking the hell out of me. Click on one add, do a search or check something on amazon and there will be adds on the other venues within about an hour.
Dig a hole and bury the car.
