'We are going to stop those who are infringing upon the human rights of our fellow Americans'
Presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke (D., Texas) said he would strip religious institutions of their tax exempt status if they oppose same-sex marriage.
"We are going to stop those who are infringing upon the human rights of our fellow Americans," the former congressman said during CNN's Equality Town Hall on Thursday.
CNN host Don Lemon pressed O'Rourke on the particulars of his plan for LGBT Americans.
"Do you think religious institutions like colleges, churches, charities, should they lose their tax exempt status if they oppose same sex marriage?" Lemon asked. O'Rourke answered with an unequivocal yes, and stressed that as president, he would make punishing religious organizations a priority.

Hey at least Robert Francis is being up front about it. This is the position of every democrat running, but most are too sneaky to admit it.
Most average folks probably dismiss this as campaign rhetoric. We need to believe what these people are saying; this is not hyperbole. This is what is at stake this election. Christians please vote!
The problem is the Constitution doesn’t guarantee that churches/synagogues/whatever religious organization are guaranteed to not have to pay *taxes*.
This is the problem with being a 501c(3) organization. You end up getting addicted, financially, to the tax benefits because the government can then change the rules for what qualifies as “tax exempt” at any time.
Best not to claim such status, even if you’re a charity/non-profit of some kind. It pays off in the long run, no pun intended, because then you can and do enjoy all the protections of the Constitution regarding your freedom of expression.
Sadly though many of the larger churches depend on the tax exempt status to operate now. So, it’s a problem, if people like Beto get elected.
Agreed.
As we have discovered, e.g. AIDS, there was a good reason to prohibit those acts. Remember, God has His reasons for the things called abominations put down in the scripture.
It is still true. Homosexuality was/is called SSAD. Same sex attraction disorder. A medical disorder. I.e. not natural.
Not a single Democrat has disavowed any utterance by Beto.
Which means they all agree with his fascist agenda. Silence equals assent.
Some people need to recognize that their 15 minutes of fame are over and STHU.
He is what it takes for Ted Cruz to win.
Had the Democrats run someone without all this crazy they would have taken a Senate seat in Texas.
I demand my Constitutional right to the marriage sacrament of the Catholic church!
Adam and Steve
Pope Beto pontificates on religious liberty. He’s nearly as liberal as Francis.
I wonder if there will be exemptions for Muslims.
Say, Beto, anyone here attended a gay muslim wedding?
Christians will bend over and take it. Muslims will start chopping off heads.
People like him dont like religions. You know, Hitler, Stalin, Mao...
Irish Bob. Dufus extraordinaire. Not hispanic in any way. Swings his arms around like a retard which he is.
That should give you a good feeling. A losing combination
Mr. 1% is increasing desperate for attention, so increases the level of his lunacy. This is a good thing for at least two reasons:
1. Whichever Dem “wins” the nomination will have to endorse, deny, waffle, or duck when asked about all of those positions.
2. With the mask totally off, Beto won’t even be able to be elected to dogcatcher in the future.
Beto has become a laughingstock - even among Democrats.
He's a screwup. Nobody respects him.
Similar to the crash & burn of Jeb Bush in the 2016 campaign. Except Beto was never even at Jeb's level to begin with.
The demon that told him to eat dirt, also told him to force sodomy on the church
Exactly - even the tax exemption law states that it doesn’t apply to the Church.
That whole “separation of Church and State” statement they love to throw around actually goes both ways (yes, it’s not in the Constitution but still goes against their argument). The State has no authority over the teachings of the Church and has no right to tax it to death if it disapproves.
