MIDDLETOWN, N.J. It was only 7 a.m., but for the commuters stewing inside a Spartan train station in this bedroom community, the day was already off to a predictably bad start.
Their train, North Jersey Coast Line 2606, which is supposed to depart at 7:06 a.m., had been canceled. Again.
This time the 18th cancellation of the year the official explanation was equipment availability resulting from a mechanical issue. But these aggrieved riders in Middletown did not seem to care. They had heard all the excuses the railroad had to offer. All that really mattered was that they were not getting to work on time. Again.
This is the plight of the hundreds of people who depend on what just may be the worst commuter train in America. The railroad they ride, New Jersey Transit, has been plagued for the last two years by a rash of cancellations.

Has it ever been on time for a whole 5 day working week?
The worst of everything in America can be found in New Jersey.
No.
The commuters are moving out of NJ.
New Jersey is very dependent on NY jobs.
Is this more of the High Culture in the big cities?
A big reason for it is that New Jersey can only maintain its population by attracting people from Third World dumps where a commuter rail system that works 60% of the time is considered a well-oiled machine.
My husband and I took this train to the city for 25 years. It was always a stressful nightmare. We retired to SW Florida 4 years ago. I don’t care if I ever set foot in Manhattan again.
In 1950 my great aunt would take me down to the station to pick up my uncle from the train. This was either probably North Plainfield, NJ since that’s where they lived but it might have been further up the line. Did it often enough that I knew his train by the engine numberI loved trains as a kid. I’m willing to bet that service was more reliable and likely faster 70 years ago than now.
“The worst of everything in America can be found in New Jersey.”
Uh,uh-—there is always Massachusetts. Too late for me to leave but if I was younger I’d scoot.

We lived in the Erskine lakes area in the late 1960’s, and none of the trains were ever on schedule.

So how long is a typical train commute? I’ve never had access to commuter trains so I guess you could say I’m a car guy no matter the distance.
There was a British Sitcom in the 1970s called the Fall and rise of Reginald Perrin.
Reggie was late for work every day because of British Rail equipment failures.
Blue America is turning into 1970s Britain.
Metro North is an okay commuter Rail... Connecticut has 3 commuter rails. Metro North, Shore Line East and Hartford Line.. I know Connecticut would like 2 more...
Hey, it is New Joisey, What do yo expect?
A lot of leftists still think British Rail should have remained in the hands of the government.
They feel that Trump may privatize the USPS.
Ping to Willie for old time sake.
Plainfield is on the Raritan Valley Line. Still not electrified. Single track in several locations, which means you have to wait for oncoming traffic. Last Diesel line in NJ. Gotta change in Newark is Secaucus.
Still better than the North Coast Line, apparently. I find that hard to believe.
This is astonishing to me. I don’t understand what has happened to NJ Transit!
And, it’s got to be Murphy’s fault, because I haven’t heard him or any other person blame Christie, which you know they would do if there was a shadow of a scintilla of a shred of evidence that it could be blamed on him.
I took this EXACT train every day for several months about 6 years ago and there was never a problem. Maybe once or twice, but even so just a delay.
WHAT IS GOING ON?
“the Fall and rise of Reginald Perrin”
OMG, I love that show! Have it on DVD. Must watch an episode soonest. So great!
