Arizona-based company to build hydrogen-powered semis and off-road vehicles (3,000 jobs)

PHOENIX - Unrest in a country thousands of miles away can cause fuel cost to spike overnight, wreaking havoc on companies trying to get their products to consumers.

It's one of the most frustrating and costly aspects of running a business, which gets passed on to the consumer in the price they pay for products. The solution to that problem may be Nikola Motors, which is purportedly the first hydrogen-powered truckmaker in the world.

The company recently moved its world headquarters to Arizona.

"This machine is one of the largest in the whole world," said Nikola Motors CEO Trevor Milton. "You can mill a car, a boat a truck."

Milton is like a kid on Christmas morning.

"Over here you see all the solar panels," said Milton. "Our entire building will be entirely zero emissions and free of energy for life, which is pretty cool."

The company is prototyping hydrogen-fuel powered trucks.

I just checked.

It looks like Nikola Tesla didn’t have a middle name...

Interesting. I wonder if he plans on using fuel cells or internal combustion engines.

Hydrogen is highly explosive. What could possibly go wrong?

Creating H2 gas is an endothermic process, especially if it starts with natural gas.

Carbon is a by-product of making it that way. Oh noes!

When you burn hydrogen your exhaust is 100% THE most active greenhouse gas- water vapor.

It is a net negative energy process.

Pretty low calorie content per pound. Where will they refill the tanks.

God help the firefighters responding to a wreck of one of these.

For me, it’s the wrong answer to the right questions.

The Trump team isn’t sleeping on any state. They’re in New Mexico, Minnesota, New Hampshire and Colorado even though they didn’t win any of those states last time.

But in the winter, the exhaust will blind you in all that water vapor fog blowing out. I can already hear cries of “AIR POLLUTION! AIR POLLUTION!”, even though it is only H2O.

Not much. The truck will run out of fuel far from home and no one will know what to do.

I bet if you dig deep enough you will see that the major attraction is billions in federal grants.

And tax breaks.

And where is the hydrogen refinery located?

Just asking. The hydrogen economy is basically derivative and is not known to be cost-effective.

Hydrogen based fuel, as far as I know, releases H2O (water vapor) as “exhaust.”

One problem....

Water vapor is a Greenhouse Gas.

It is actually a more potent GHG than CO2.

When you burn Hydrogen it puts out pure Dihydrogen Monoxide!
One of the leading causes of death!!!

Sounds fascinating. Especially if the engines/process can be done safely. It sounds like the hydrogen (water generating) power will then power large electric motors. It could be the breakthrough needed to transform the trucking industry.

Cars will probably be a different ballgame but I could see future locomotives being hydrogen powered instead of diesel powered. Probably take 40-50 years to transition though.

What if large hydrogen powered generators supplied the electricity to recharge battery powered cars. The gas stations could be retrofitted to pump gas and electricity via quick charges once the battery technology catches up so it doesn’t put a major strain on the electrical grids. Could mini (safe) hydrogen power plants for cars be in our future someday. Goodbye batteries. I say it’s okay to dream but I’m still sticking with my old gas powered cars and bikes. :)

What we really need is a hydrogen-fueled dirigible. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

I one had a tin can of dehydrated dihydrogen monoxide. It seemed safe enough.
