The Army is revamping small-arms training with tougher marksmanship tests designed to better prepare troops whether cook or infantryman to shoot straight while under duress.
The new standards, which take effect in October, will change how troops train with pistols and automatic rifles, the Army said. The standards must be met by October 2020.
"It's exactly what we would do in a combat environment, and I think it's just going to build a much better shooter," Sgt. Maj. Robert K. Fortenberry, of the Army's infantry school at Fort Benning, Ga., said in a statement.
The aim is to get all soldiers to a "baseline" set of marksmanship skills that go beyond achieving just a passing score during routine weapons qualification testing. Rather than pulling from stacked pre-staged ammunition to hit targets, troops will now need to draw their gear as they would in conflict.
"Marksmanship training should also train soldiers on the other tasks they'd face in using their weapon in combat," the Army release said. Read the rest of Army revamps shooting program.
I think the SGM is onto something....but why is this just now being figured out?
The need to train under as realistic as conditions can be is paramount.
As is staying the hell off the SGM’s grass......
This will stand until the first female soldier fails.
This is a basic, common-sense training update. It should have been that way all along!
Before WWII, most American men were familiar with firearms both through the belief in the second amendment and hunting. Thus most American soldiers were able to hit what they were shooting at. The Germans, generally unfamiliar with guns were clueless. The Germans were astounded by Americans abilities with guns which they didn’t have. This is considered one of the reasons we won WWII. Also, because of the second amendment, the Japanese did not attack as they knew there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass. In today’s effeminate world, we no longer have this advantage of innate skills, plus government is trying to disarm us. This make us open to enemy attack, which I think would be treason. Just sayin’.
USMC has been teaching real marksmanship since “...every Marine a rifleman..” on known distance ranges. Only since somewhat recently (10 or 12 years?) has it included the practical aspects as part of training. Not sure it the package is the same now, but a week of fundamentals, including hours of snap-in (dry fire), then a week of KD course familiarization, pre-qual, and qual. Solid skills that 30 years later, still put the pills where intended.
Someone else old said ‘...there are few master skills, just fundamental skills mastered...’ or something like that.
sight alignment

trigger control
Still works

This after lowering the standards for years to allow girls and trannies to serve:-)
Get some Marine Corps Drill Instructors to run the program. Theyll learn one way or the other.
Semper Fi.

Wow, what a concept.
KD shooting is the standard in the Corps, and the Army has a deep seated distrust of the Corps, so discourages KD marksmanship. (A battle sight zeroed M-16 is only 9 inches high at 200 meters, the max, so?) At any range to 300, where the bullet drops back to point of aim, point of impact, if you aim for center mass, you're gonna kill him.
However, FIRST, YOU HAVE TO HIT THE BASTARD! INSTINCTIVELY!
AKA “The Three Secrets”...
Must be secret because so few shooters have ever heard or understand, let alone employ them...
Shooting well is a perishable skill...Practice and more practice to maintain it...Use it or lose it...
Everything to know about shooting during war was learned during World War II. They analyzed it 6 ways from Sunday, including who shoots and who refuses to shoot at another human being. It sounds like the Army is just reinventing the wheel. Look for this new approach to combat shooting to create more problems than it solves. This sounds like a disease in search of a cure by arrogant people who think they know better.
This happens all the time. In the 1930s, we perfected indoor plumbing. Sinks that don’t splash or splatter water all over the counter because of the design and faucet placement. Fast forward to today and I see water ponding all over bathroom counters today at work or in restaurants or businesses I visit, because the new designers are constantly trying to re-invent a wheel that was perfect before.
Idiots.
Three ought six on semi automatic had a lot to do with it. Germans were returning fire with predominantly bolt action Mausers, out gunned.
I think your assessment might be a little harsh. I’ll give then a little more benefit of the doubt before criticizing improved training. I qualified expert in pistol and rifle some 39 years ago, but my ‘training’ for that was very basic marksmanship, not nearly the set of defensive shooting skills I possess today, learned from years of shooting schools, practice, and teaching said skills. If the services are moving to more realistic training scenarios where physical and time constraints are placed on top of accuracy requirements, and dexterity skills like emergency or tactical reloads and malfunction clearances must be dealt with while one is under duress and heart racing/breathing heavy, then good on the military.
do or die.. Hooyah!
