One other thing you can try is Belarc Advisor (it’s free)

https://www.belarc.com/products_belarc_advisor

If you are missing a hotfix or something, it will usually give you a direct link to the download without having to run MS Update.

The only option is to install Windows 11 : )
Or do as others here say and revert back using System Restore.

Sorry about your cancer. My post was meant to be funny. But truthfully, Linux Mint Cinnamon looks like the old XP, little to learn. No forced updates, no viruses, free software.

You got stuck in 1809. Quit fighting it. Instead, get through to an HP, US-based tech and ask them to send you a clean Win system install flash drive.

They’ll know your model, etc. It will likely install an even earlier Win version, but before installing any additional software, just give it 2 days to upgrade to 1903.

Yes, and one can Perform an 'in-place upgrade' to fix a buggy Windows installation Without Deleting Your Software, Files...

And he may be able to download the latest W/10 iso from MS and install it using the Microsoft Windows 10 Installation / Media Creation Tool.

Best to make sure you have the valid product key copied.

You mean after downloading more memory? We need to be careful with novices, as they may think both are to be taken seriously.

Or do as others here say and revert back using System Restore.

Which he has tried, as explained, but not yet in Safe Mode.

Not to W/10 Pro - unless you upgraded from a previous pro version.

I’m running windows 7 and had uncontrolled scrolling, crashes, curser jumping, slow downloads, couldn’t insert without tweaking over and over and other issues. Spent weeks going thru everything possible to correct these. Finally did a Norton Eraser, which goes deep into the computer, in hopes that would at least identify. Ended up it was ‘Defender-Pro’ program which buries itself into your registry and reconstitutes itself even after you uninstall. Norton Eraser named it as bad and removed it.....all issues stopped then.

Thank God, but you mean that program did not show up in your list of running programs? The well-tested free Process Explorer and AutoRuns can help with that. Plus Win Patrol o alert the user to secret additions to the start up folder, etc.

Keep praying.
You'll learn the hard way, like I did.

I've had pilots in the military that been telling me since I bought my first computer back in 1981 about Apple.
But I didn't listen either.
Finally in 2001 I decided to try Apple.
It's been the best thing I've done with my computers, ... ever.
I won't ever go back to Microsoft, or anything that is based on their highly flawed operating systems.

If you haven’t already done so, download the HP Support Assistant from the HP website, then run it. I had a similar problem on a new system at work. Turned out to be the biosand several drivers were out of date and wouldn’t run the latest MS update.

That's CRUCIAL if you do a clean install, which is why you should get the flashdrive from HP, which will give you a license along w/ the clean install.

If you can do a "soft reset," God bless ya. Worth a try. Go to "Settings/Update & Security/Recovery" If you do a hard reset, make sure you are doing it from within your existing installation or w/ a licensed copy.

Thanks. That seems like sound advice for a non techie like me.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that I no longer had a working copy of Malwarebytes. I had in the past used this free program and was very happy with it. I decided to reload it, and somehow I got into a free trial of their premium program. That program almost wiped out my computer speed wise. Everything was running at about 1/5 th speed. Terminated it, and I’m back to normal. Windows 7 Professional, Firefox browser.

Over my head. What is that, and how can it help me with my problem?

That was just in regards to your statement, "Have you seen how often Windows 10 calls home? It's nuts. Like every few seconds.

No it didn't show in programs.....I double check when I uninstall a program. “Defender-Pro” from what I understand reconstitutes itself via the registry even though i periodically do fix's in the reistry I didn't see it there either...it's basically a fake security system from what I’ve read about it after the fact of course. 'Running' programs at start up are difficult for me to read as they are listed in abbreviations which are unclear for me. I'll check out the links you listed and thank you.
