Windows 10 And All Browsers Are Repeatedly Crashing

Help!

I have a three week old HP laptop that was working beautifully until the Microsoft update on 27 August 2019. Since then my browser tabs have been crashing repeatedly throughout every session, and periodically, the computer crashes too.

I'm a simple user with just enough savvy to post here and build simple websites. I don't have the skills to sort this out, and need some help, please.

I've already tried doing a system restore to an earlier date, but the computer keeps crashing before it completes. I've run CCleaner and Malwarebytes too many times to count. I've sent countless crash reports to Mozilla and Microsoft, to no avail.

I even uninstalled Ghostery and AdBlock Plus, thinking that they might be the culprits, but no joy with that, either.

Is anyone else on the board having similar issues? Do any of you have a suggestion as to how I can fix this?

Before you go there, I realize that Linux is one solution, but I'm too old and sick (with cancer) to rise to the challenge of that learning curve right now. I just want the damn thing to work like it did when I first set it up three weeks ago.

Coincidentally, I bought this computer to replace another clinically insane HP laptop!

So the computer only crashes if a browser (any browser) is running?

About 99% of the time. It has crashed while trying to reboot after a crash, on occasion.

More diagnostic work is needed. Are there any yellow marks in Device manager (Run devmgmt.msc)?

Daniel, you keep losing me with the geek shorthand and nomenclature. I'm telling you, I'm a SIMPLE user.

What does Run devmgmt.msc mean, and how do I go about initiating it? I'm guessing that command opens the device manager, right?

Okay, where do I go to type that code in?

Alright, Malwarebytes ran okay this time. Nothing found. All clear.

Go to task manager and see if there is something running that is using up all your system resources.

I did that days ago. Nothing is using copious amounts of resources. Not even my FF browser.

Have you gone here yet? https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/laptops

Not yet, but I just loaded a diagnostic tool at that site, and it's disappeared into my system. Can't find it to run it.

Good deal. Those 2 programs solve certain problems, so it sounds like a Win-10 glitch.

My thinking is that I will never need to do the things Windows 10 offers beyond Windows 7, and I’m thinking that if I get a virus I’ll just restore from the image backup which I took earlier.

My wife ran across an article yesterday that says Microsoft has decided to offer continuing support for Windows 7 as a paid subscription service.

I'm thinking that might be the best option for me. I've had nothing but trouble with Windows 10 since I was forced into using it on some of our newer devices.

Is there anyway you can take this back to where you bought it?

My wife just checked with Amazon, and it looks like we can return it. Just need to set it up with customer service.

I'd really rather fix it, though. Think I'll call a mobile geek.

I’ve been using Waterfox on the advice of a fellow Freeper. It’s essentially Firefox but with a lot of their bloat stripped away. So far it’s a nice experience.

Sorry, Wuli. I'm busy chasing up so many suggestions that I'm becoming lost. I'll try it and get back to you.

I'm having trouble even locating the list of installed updates prior to September 2019. Maybe I've already deleted them without knowing it.

Man, my brain aches...

Do so, but keep an eye on how much time Amazon will give you.

A geek may or may not be able to fix it (I know, I am a Microsoft Certified Geek/MCT/MCSE/MCDBA/MCITP). ;-)

If not, you can then make the trade.

I have done some research on this and, unfortunately, can't find anything that helps much. Sorry.

It's okay. I have to let go of this for the day anyway. I simply don't have the stamina to plow my way through all of the technical jargon and instructions to get anywhere. So much of it is beyond my meager capabilities.

I'm beginning to think that the problem lies in the fact that Windows 10 hasn't yet downloaded and installed all of the available updates for this computer.

Like I said, I keep going in there and trying to manually update. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I guess I'll just keep trying that until there are no more updates available for this build (1809).

I doubt this is the cause, but what I’ve been noticing lately is that sites are disabling something if we have adblock- you can get to the site- but you can’t click on anything, or leave comments or anything until you unblock that site- looks like they are discovering a way to defeat adblock

Then see `Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tool

1. Run built-in windows troubleshooting tool:

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\ System and Security\Fix problems with Windows Update\Advanced\Run as administrator:

2. Run System Update Readiness Tool  to fix the issue automatically.

3.Run the command sfc /scannow with administrator right to check the health of system files.

4. Perform a Clean Boot  and manually update again.

maybe soemone has mentioned this already, but if not, if worse comes to worse- do a system rollback if you have that activated- do it to a time before you had the problem
