I was wondering why I saw such a large gathering of White Ibis outside today. We normally have a few of them around but not this many so I did some research and found out that according to Indian folklore, the White Ibis are the first birds to exit an area when a hurricane approaches and are the first to return when a hurricane leaves the area. This confirms that this Indian folklore, based on hundreds and thousands of years of observing animal behavior, is correct.
I was going to say, “How racist to assume that only WHITE Ibis have the intelligence to leave early.”.
Well done!
Poor Ibis are just as smart as White Ibis!..................
Lol!
This is why the Ibis is the mascot of the Miami Hurricanes.
I was later able to get up close (or as close as they would let me) to the Ibis and got some video shots of them in a feeding frenzy. I might post that video tomorrow.
So hard to read, but so beautifully written!
Thank You.
The behavior of animals is always a good indicator of climate conditions, since they have no agenda and are just doing physical responses. The old and usually very accurate “Old Farmer’s Almanac” was based on observations of animal behavior, among other things.
When it rains heavily, the worms have to come to the surface, or drown.
I too follow Indian Lore. Can’t wait for the return of the Great Peacemaker.
Great story. Thank G*d birds don’t go by “modern” or “ancient”, but only “current”.
I believe it’s considered folklore because it isn’t a scientific observation. I’m sure some conehead at a university will be asking for grant money to study it.
Whoever thought indian lore would manifest itself inside a condo complex.
