AKs are kind of like a cheeseburger. However you want it, you can have it. Those are Jared LaMarches thoughts on the Kalashnikov, or AK, rifle. LaMarche is a gunsmith at Windsor Arms in Windsor, Vermont. They bring a bunch of their AKs and other guns to the Green Mountain Boys Machine Gun Shoot in Eden, Vermont. The event takes place mid-July of every year.
LaMarche is a big fan of AKs. A lot of people think that the AK is not a fun, or a great gun. I think its awesome, he told Guns.com at last years shoot. He went on to explain that the AK platform was made for a conscript army. Which is when you take a potato farmer, you take him out of the field and you give him a rifle, and now hes a soldier.
LaMarche demonstrated a few full auto AKs, ARs, a VEPR-12 full auto shotgun along with a few other interesting and rare guns at the Vermont shoot. He believes that once you shoot a good quality AK, with good quality ammo, you too will be a big believer in the AK platform.
What do you think? Do you prefer AK or AR?
Here are a few AKs that Ive had the pleasure of photographing over the last few years.

The FAL is the one gun I always wanted but never owned.
Fabrique Nationale d’armes de Guerre Herstal, Belgique
Armalite also makes a .50 BMG.
The beauty of the AK is that Comrade Mikhail Timofeyevich was acknowledging that it was to be made in a country with mostly 19th Century manufacturing standards. You could meet his design specs without CNC and with nothing more than semi-skilled machinists.
I had never thought about it but I think I had rather have one of the nicer SKS’s Than an AK style. Very unlikely I will ever need a 30 shot mag. Not that it would not be a nice feature.
I hated the M-16 in Vietnam. A large toothbrush some called it. Ka-ching, ka-ching, it went.
An AK in decent shape was made out of what a gun should be made of; blue steel & wood.
Many years later I acquired an AK or two in legal form. Commie chic still works for me. That so-called sh***y ammo the Russians sell has never jammed on me. When it comes to killing machines, the Motherland makes the best.
I just bought an Arsenal SAM7R AK this past Saturday, new in box. It’s my 6th AK
By the way, the chick on the right wants me
Picture a rifle as easy to clean as an AK, with an equal ability to keep running when filthy dirty. Then add ergonomics as good as an AR, and chamber it in .308/7.62x51. And the rifle could have been even better - IIRC, it was originally designed to chamber a British 7mm intermediate cartridge (somewhat similar to the 6.5mm Grendel or 6.8mm SPC), which would have made it a lot easier to control in full auto. But the U.S. military insisted on a NATO cartridge with .30-06 ballistics, so we got the 7.62x51 NATO instead (not that it matters to civilian shooters ;^)...
I believe the first prototype of the FAL was built in 8mm Kurz. It’s a pity the intermediate cartridge wasn’t accepted at that point.
I agree. I have a Radical Arms 7.62 x 39 upper and it works perfectly.
Reasonably accurate with cheap Russian ammo and if your use to shooting AR’s it’s the way to go. Just make sure you have good mags.
Had a custom built AK and a SKS. Fired them both once and sold them. The AK just didn’t feel right and I new it never would.
Mine came with a C-products magazine.
I need more, what magazine do you find works best?
The bolt carrier group comes apart very easily, too. Pull the bolt back and forth in and out of the BCG. There’s a fat, pin-like part with a head on it that turns and comes out in order to separate the bolt from the rest. If the firing pin needs to come out (not always), there’s a little roll pin that pokes out easy with a very slight push from something skinny. I used q-tips to clean M-16 BCGs for years for duty (Army National Guard). Used q-tips to clean most of the other parts, too, except for the bores. ...pipe cleaners for another part or two, IIRC.
[It’s late, so I don’t have a great way with words or much time right now.]
What AKs are for.

Looks kinda bastardized. A Chinese front sight, front trunnion is ComBloc. The third pin makes up for it, though.
I will say this for it...
1. It works.
2. It ALWAYS works.
3. When you need it, it works.
4. When you DON’T need it, it STILL works.
5. See 1 through 4 above.
An AK is like the third-best chick on the dance floor... she ain’t the prettiest, she ain’t the smartest, but she’s got the biggest boobs in the room and will definitely do you later after a drink or two.
Pretty much sums it up.
If I had to pick ONE and ONLY ONE firearm, Id pick a Kalashnikov, no question.
Why? Because of the reason you posted.
Cute ... What calibe do you suppose the AK74 uses?
Or an SKS, as we’ve discussed before.
Of course! Although, the Kalashnikov offers 30+ round capacity with no tinkering.
That video still cracks me up, without fail, every time.
What’s really funny is that JUST as Bonehead is handing the monkey the AK, one of the others is shouting “NO-NO-NO-NO-NO!”
As with anything else, some of the worst - and funniest mishaps, in EVERY culture, starts with the words - “Hey, wanna see something funny???”
