The third Saturday of August marks the worlds largest celebration of car culture in Metro Detroit and today marks the 25th anniversary of that celebration, the Woodward Dream Cruise.
They share the date with Cajun and Mr. Cajun who are celebrating their 53rd anniversary today, so celebrations are in order!
The Dream Cruise was started by Nelson House in 1995 and a group of volunteers who wanted to recreate a bit of nostalgic fun associated with the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, Americas first highway.
Bob Seger, in case you didnt recognize him. Local boy.
The first event attracted 250,000 people - ten times the number expected - and the rest, as they say, is history.
Its now a 16-mile traffic jam, but a traffic jam consisting of more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles. A million spectators line the route of the family friendly spectacle just to look at all the classic vehicles.
You couldnt pay me enough to go again as the heat and the crowds have become a bit much. But it is awesome if youve never been, assuming you love cars, and who doesnt? Aside from Millennials.
All day and all night there is a constant stream of classic cars cruising the circuit with even more on display in pop-up car shows scattered along the route.
In fact, if you live anywhere in the expansive metro-Detroit area you will see classic cars all weekend as they travel to and from the main stage on Woodward.
They dont call us Motown for nuthin.
So whether you like em big:
fast,
classic,
or flashy
Theres something for you at the Dream Cruise.
The Great America Car: its not just an allegory, its a legend. Let the legend continue.

Circumstances prevented me from getting there. And now I am not physically able.
I hope my Challenger doesn’t hear but I would LOVE a shot at that new Corvette.
I would love to go again.I got to drive my 2014 Taurus among all those muscle cars at cruising speeds. I stayed in the middle away from the crowds, of course, but it was fun.
I am sorry you are not physically able.
I looked up your tagline and it’s a great tagline.
Sometimes one thinks something to UTTER DEATH and the thing you needed to make a decision about passed you by and now it doesn’t matter WHAT you decide.
I have been there.
Change IS terrifying. To some. To me and others.
But not a whole lot happens without it.
It’s the BEST tagline I have seen on FR.
Have a good day.
Wow...just wow! Would love to be there, love those cars.
, and who doesnt? Aside from Millennials.””
I don’t know what demographic name today’s 9 yr olds are given but my son and all of his friends carry around picture cards of their favorite cars. They carspot on any trip. They can tell you the mech stats of all the super cars.
Added to the bucket list!
Thanks for posting.
If I wanted to I could rent a classic car, drive it up and down Woodward Ave., and when somebody watching from the sidewalk yells, “Hey, nice car!”...I can say “Thank you” and nobody would even know that the car was not mine.
Thanks for posting. I SO want to attend this, maybe next year.
Another (ex) motor city previously known as Buick City - Flint - is wrapping up its Back to the Bricks rod week. Pretty good event, too.
Many of downtown Flints streets were (some still are) paved with bricks. Flint was a booming auto town; its a shadow of itself now.
