Looking for info on the source of arms of Mexican drug cartels
16th August 2019 | Ennis

I'm currently composing a response letter to someone who wrote a rebuttal to a previous letter I wrote to a newspaper in relation to the recenting shooting in El Paso and gun violence in the US as a whole.

I had made the point in response to calls for stricter gun laws that Mexico has such laws and a 50% higher homicide rate than the US.

His reponse was basically the question if I believe it's okay for racists to purchase assault rifles to murder people as well as the assertion that 80% of Mexican shootings are done by drug cartels with guns bought in the US.

I'm aware of the fact that assault rifles are already illegal in the US, that AR-15 aren't assult rifles since they are semi-automatic. My inquiry is actually regarding his second assertion about 80% of Mexican shootings with American guns. I has actually read up on this subject before debunking this claim but that was some time ago and my knowledge is a bit hazy on the subject.

So I was just wondering if anyone has any good research on this particular issue?

I had a buddy that was living in Costa Rica and smuggling blue jeans into Nicaragua. He married a Nicaraguan girl and settled in Managua. He told me he bought AKs from the police department there and said you could buy anything you wanted. This was in the 90s so I don’t know about now.

Thanks, that was actually very interesting. I suspected the majority of weapons came out of Latin America because there seemed to be as many AKs as AR platforms in the photos of weapons confiscated. One photo I saw had a lot of what appeared to be M16A1 or early AR 15 platforms. Weapons common to Latin American military’s but out of use here for well over 20 years or more.

It has been reported that corrupt elements in the Mexican military sell weapons. In addition, weapons are readily available in jungle areas of Columbia where drugs are produced. Those areas were formerly under the control of FARC, a communist inspired group of fighters. It has been reported that they supply weapons along with drugs.

In one instance grenades from South Korea were seized from cartel members. See the set of images and text here

Any organization that can produce, ship, and sell billions of dollars worth of illegal drugs can just as well purchase, ship, and distribute firearms. They are already doing so for their own purposes.

There is speculation that the cartels have basically "purchased" the border zone from Mexican and Democrat politicians.

They are ruling the zone like a government.

That would explain the eagerness of American Democrat politicans to look the other way.

“as well as the assertion that 80% of Mexican shootings are done by drug cartels with guns bought in the US.”

Assuming that’s accurate, tell him he should support President Trump’s border security measures to help prevent illegals and cartel members from crossing the border and illegally obtaining the weapons. Then ask if he’ll feel any better when the cartels simply turn to the black market and buy AK47s, while ordinary Mexican citizens are still banned from owning weapons.

Both the U.S. and Russia have sold arms to various central and south american governments over the years, governments that are basically owned by the drug cartels. The cartels are worth billions, when you have that kind of money you can buy whatever you want. Mexico’s supposedly strict gun control laws sure aren’t stopping them, those laws only apply to the peasants.

The cartels aren’t coming to the U.S. to buy guns, they’ve got access to much better stuff at home.
