Bay Area start-up Rent the Backyard is making new room in dense cities by collaborating with homeowners who've got a little extra acreage. The company will install a prefab studio apartment on unused land behind your home, handle all the permitting required to do so, find a worthy tenant to rent the unit, and pay you 50% of the profits for providing the spaceall for zero up-front costs. Theyre partnering with companies like NODE, who make sustainable, carbon-neutral homes that can be installed in just a few days. Utilities will hook up to the property's principal dwelling, and they'll be metered and reimbursed. Participants can expect to add roughly $10k to their annual income (dependent on the going rate for a studio apartment in your city), and cities will get new affordable housing in previously unused space.

ok, someone go to their website, type in your email address and share what they send back. very little information so far.
I am sure that ctdonath2 and Mariner have offered up their property for this Leftist scheme.
Pacific Heights, 2019 version. Honey I Shrunk Pacific Heights.
Any bets that sending your email address will be mostly about seeking investor money?
Also,if the new residents do something illegal, who is responsible?
> Just what every homeowner needs. A crash pad for junkies and psychos in their back yard. <
You nailed it. And heaven help the homeowner who has a teenage daughter. Better get her a handgun. Oh, wait. This is California. Better get her a loud whistle.
If they go 50/50 on repairs and eviction costs, it’ll be a “go”... Otherwise it’ll incentivize filling the houses with people who will pay one month, destroy the house, and not leave until a few thousand has been paid to an eviction attorney.
And my insurance company would have a cow!...................
At the end, the article says “And yes, you can choose your own tenant, if you’d like.”
That’s really big of them!
I hate to break this to you, but I'm not in the rental market right now. You might check back later, though.
Ideally, the tiny house will rest on skids. If you decide not to keep it around, a fork lift could move it over to your neighbor’s yard, preferably at night.
Just wait until you try and kick out an annoying tenant.
How long before you are forced to accept an immigrant family?
I guess the homeowners might need a place to stay when the government gives their house to an illegal alien.
Wonder what the neighbors would say if someone plopped five or six or those on their property.
Yeah, put a bum in a free house out in my backyard. Then I can’t get in my hot tub naked anymore. Everytime I smoke a brisket, they’ll come over and want to get chatty and friendly. Any other bright ideas?
It says nothing about hooking up to a sewage system. Very expensive and in some cases entirely impractical.
I see this voluntary program becoming mandatory if it is successful. Remember you never own your house or land. Property taxes ensure it.
Interesting.
Aye, there's the rub. You rent it out to a squeaky-clean-looking guy, and he sublets to a not-so-squeaky-clean buddy or brings in a few not-so-squeaky-clean "friends". As others have said, now try to get them out.
And, if they are not on a vacant lot, but in your large back yard, read the prophetic post 17.
