Using the two latest mass shootings as fodder, rank-and-file Democrats and chest-puffed Presidential candidates alike have began using these two tragedies to stump for more gun control. Here are the top players and what each is advocating for:
Trump, McConnell Want Universal Background Checks
The President has called upon Congress to act on intelligent and meaningful legislation, specifically requesting that the House pass a federal, universal background check for all firearm sales. One senior White House adviser says Trump is actively pursing an expansion of background checks for gun buyers.
Trump and Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell are reportedly also considering expanding red flag laws, which allow authorities to temporarily seize firearms from anyone deemed a threat to themselves or others. These laws have been met with stark criticism and controversy, with many questioning the constitutionality of such legislation. Many feel these laws violate due process.
Fox News senior judicial analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said the federal government can't force states to enact such laws, but can provide financial incentive and "pay" them to pass their own frameworks. "The theory of the Constitution is we don't punish people or take their rights away from them because of what they might do, what they could do, because of what we fear they'll do, but only because of what they have done," he said Tuesday on "Fox & Friends."
Elizabeth Warren Wants 30% and 50% Arms Taxes
Sen. Elizabeth Warren has gone much further than cautious Republicans the incumbent President, openly calling for raises taxes on gun manufacturers. Her proposal demands taxes on guns be raised from 10% to 30%, and taxes on ammo, from 11% to 50%. Warren also wants to implement a national federal licensing system, requiring all Americans to submit to a screening and approval process before purchasing a firearm. Warren has also said that the minimum age to purchase a gun should be raised 21 from 18, and that gun industry CEOs should be held personally liable for gun violence.
Biden Wants Assault Weapon Ban (After Admitting it Doesnt Work)
Apparent Democratic-frontrunner Joe Biden has once again called for an assault weapons ban, much like the ban that was signed by then-President Clinton in 1994. Except he also admitted that such a ban doesnt work. "From 1994 to 2004, the years when assault weapons and high-capacity magazines were banned, there were fewer mass shootings," he writes, citing a study reported in The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery last January. But that is not what the researchers, led by New York University epidemiologist Charles DiMaggio, actually found: "In a linear regression model controlling for yearly trend, the federal ban period was associated with a statistically significant 9 fewer mass shooting-related deaths per 10,000 firearm homicides," they reported.
In other words, the difference in total fatalities during the period when the ban was in effect amounted to just 15 fewer deaths over a full decade, or 1.5 deaths a year on average. Nonetheless, an assault weapon ban is being drummed up yet again, and this time, its more worrying for gun owners. A few months ago, federal bill H. R. 7115 was introduced in Congress. The bill would effectively prohibit the sale of certain AR-15 parts, gun-making kits, and 80% lower receivers, frame blanks used to machine a firearm receiver at home. This process has long been legal under the Gun Control Act of 1968, but with such legislation already sitting in the House, it would be much easier for Democrats to push new, restrictive gun bans on a flourishing tactical rifle market.
Republicans are Pushing Back
Not all politicians are rank-and-file on the gun control debate. Sen. Rick Scott has said that a focus on mental health, not taking guns from law-abiding citizens, is the right way to pursue an end to mass shootings and widespread gun violence. This is like Groundhog Day, we have a shooting and Democrats want to take away your guns. They dont want to solve problems, they want to take away your guns. Thats what totalitarian governments do, Scott, R-Fla., told America's Newsroom.
Chris Sununu, Republican governor of New Hampshire, has made similar statements. Sununu recently vetoed three gun control measures he says would have done nothing to curb violence but would have infringed 2A rights: A universal background check mandate, a three-day waiting period for purchase, and the prohibition of concealed carry on school propertied. In vetoing these measures, Sununu remarked: New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the nation, and we have a long and proud tradition of responsible firearm ownership. Our laws are well-crafted and fit our culture of responsible gun ownership and individual freedom. It remains to be seen what new packet of gun control legislation will be introduced by House Democrats or the President.
This should be posted as "Chat". YOU don't write news.
Calm yourself, Charlie.
The only gun control proposal I would support: if a person is thought to be a danger to themselves or others, go through due process, and if found mentally unstable such that they truly are a danger, them committed to an institution for treatment and care.
I believe this would have stopped at least several mass shooting where police were called many times, and family reported the perp out of control and dangerous.
You have quite the history of portraying yourself as an authority:

Almost as if you’ve declared yourself qualified to teach
us poor schlubs on Free Republic. We so dumb, you teach us!
In your month-and-a-half here, you’ve declared yourself a leader!
How about you!
“political rights can only belong to those that carry weapons.” Draco of Athens (621/620 BC).
Unless he happens to be a journalist in fact. Sometimes you never know who is behind a username. I have “assumed” many times and was wrong.
I support “UNINFRINGING” as written in the 2nd.
Would you admit to being a “journalist”? :-)
Outlaw private sales and/or enact Red Flag and the GOP will disappear in 2020.
ROFL......
I clicked that link.
Seems he has posted over 10 well written articles and has had hundreds of replies.
“How about you!” Turn that into a question and ask yourself. How about you?
How many well written articles have you posted? I know you’ve posted a thread or two. And I know every once in a great while - you actually post a reply that is thoughtful, insightful and has actual value.
But seriously HG. Unless and until you actually have something other than a snarky caustic remark, be quiet for once.
That’s the thing. I once had a similar assumption about someone and it turned out that he was the high profile editor in chief of a major firearm magazine who wished, for many many good reasons, to remain anonymous.
😁👍
The only one on that list that matters is President Trump. I can say with certainty that he needs to decide which is more important for the country a background check gun control bill which will save zero lives or a second term. No matter how anyone and everyone on this board votes if President Trump signs any gun control bill he will not be reelected. Someone needs to talk some sense into him quick.
Turn it right back. Have you ever criticized Bush or Obama?
You've never been a President.
How many well written articles have you posted?
Am I required to do so before criticizing a self-promoter?
You've criticized presidents without having ever been one.
Unless and until you actually have something other than a snarky caustic remark, be quiet for once.
No.
Here we have some wanker using FR to boost his ego and I'll point it out.
Who does he think he is to lecture you?
In retrospect, I remember appreciating his time and effort to come share with us no matter where it ended up being posted considering who he was.
I’m hoping Pres. Trump’s musings about the recent mass shooting and what might be done about guns are just musings. He and the GOP will shoot themselves in the foot if they let an expanded gun check and a “red flag” law happen.
We who voted for Trump in 2016 are very passionate about the 2nd Amendment and will be very unhappy if any anti-gun laws result due to any surrender by Trump or the GOP Senators.
They’ll have to kill me to disarm me. What say you?
I’m through giving up ANY MORE of my rights.
I’ll say what I please regarding gender confusion and “*pride”. I’ll petition my government for redress of grievances.
I’ll keep and BEAR my damned arms.
I’ll provide no quarter.
I’ll defend my home against invasion.
etc.
Unhappy enough to put nuzzlin’ Joe, mumbles sanders or princess running beaver in as 46?
