His real first name was Elmore? I can see why he invented another name. Rip had a very long career. I always got the impression that he was a friendly person, even off camera.

Like Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Robert Stack, Rip turned to comedy later in his career and was very good at it.
