I think they mean the Catholic world, not the Christian world. They are a subset with some rather unique non-biblical perspectives.

It is my understanding that Matthew wrote Matthew, Mark wrote Mark, Luke wrote Luke, and John wrote the Book of John. I wasn't there, but I haven't found any reason to fly in the face of this teaching. I'd give a specific source for my understanding such as Geisler and Nix, the Geneva Study Bible, Matthew Henry's Commentary, and other works, but I can't name specifically who taught what. It has become jumbled in my brain.
